Just passed my General class test on Saturday!!!!

Congrats -
There are lots of good radios out there. The Wouxun KG-935G plus is certainly one at the top of my list for an HT. For Mobile the KG-1000 plus has bells and whistles. The right radio for you could include many factors that only you can determine (price, waterproof, number of channel spaces, simple or complex, and so on). Whatever you choose ignore those that tell you that you chose wrong and enjoy. Most of all, good luck stopping at one

If by the club you mean The Mesa Crest Club if you click on the link and post your question in their forum you may have better luck than asking in the overall forums general area. Good luck.

Wouxun KG-935G + Channel Wizard Question
WRUU653 replied to dsm600rr's question in Technical Discussion
I use Chirp and the red Wouxun cable from By Two Way Radios which is the first one you referance. I use a Mac so I tend to use Chirp because they are Mac compatible. Some of the radios are Mac supported by RT and they have a good reputation. -
It’s much brighter than either of them. It’s very nice for seeing the screen in the outdoors!

Wouxun KG-935G + Channel Wizard Question
WRUU653 replied to dsm600rr's question in Technical Discussion
The advantage of the Channel Wizard, its function really is it puts all the settings for creating a new channel in one location. This is much simpler than moving all around the menu to put things in one at a time. Having now tried it I have to say it’s a pretty nice feature. -
Wouxun KG-935G + Channel Wizard Question
WRUU653 replied to dsm600rr's question in Technical Discussion
That’s kind of you to say. I try and help when I can and if I can. There are some good people here and smarter than me. What makes someone good or helpful isn’t predicated on their geography. You’ll find them all over the map. You don’t have to look very hard to see that. I have had this radio for some time and to be honest I was in the same boat as @WRNU354 and I just hadn’t bothered with the Channel Wizard feature before. So I also gave it a go and I can confirm once you save the channel that’s is as far as the Channel Wizard is concerned, channel wizard is no longer looking at the channel you saved. Your radio is working properly. Now that I have used this I agree with @WRNU354 that this is a great way to add a channel while on the road. Perfect looking up a repeater on the map and adding it without having to bust out the laptop. -
Radioddity DB20-G CPS Programming tips (a/k/a Anytone AT-779UV)

Worth the money too I think. I never hear complaints about their software. -
Radioddity DB20-G CPS Programming tips (a/k/a Anytone AT-779UV)
WRUU653 replied to MichaelLAX's question in Technical Discussion
It may have been true two years ago but no that’s not what’s holding things up. Go to chirp and do a search on the models and you’ll find they did open up various new model issues under the different models. It looks like they hit a wall. RT software has recently cracked the Anytone model that I believe was found to work on the DB20 so there is hope chirp may succeed. Remember these people at chirp volunteer so they may or may not get to it. Meanwhile you can buy the Anytone RT software though at present it’s only for windows. -
Assuming you programmed in more than 74 channels. Have you tried downloading from the radio again to see what's actually there? I don't know this radio personally but chirp should tell you what you were able to put in.

Wouxun KG-935G Plus / Question about deleting a repeater I put in
WRUU653 replied to OverYonder's question in Technical Discussion
So when you heard a noise after transmitting did the bar turn blue? If so what you may have heard is a squelch tail from the repeater which means you probably hit it. Perhaps no one was there to respond or sometimes you can be close enough to reach it but not quite transmit through it. If you're only a few miles I would think you are good but hills can impede that. -
Wouxun KG-935G Plus / Question about deleting a repeater I put in
WRUU653 replied to OverYonder's question in Technical Discussion
The red bar just means you are transmitting, it will have a blue bar if your radio is receiving. Meaning if you get a transmit or squelch tail back from the repeater it will be blue -
I saw that too. I think I would prefer using a Midland MXTA26 antenna if using that mount to get it up higher from the hood but lots of jeeps use a similar mounting.

myGMRS National Net System (California)
WRUU653 replied to danno02's topic in National and Regional GMRS Nets
Welcome to the forum. I know you’re new but you will find Southern California has quite a lot of repeaters. A massive number by comparison to most places. Maybe a few less where you are but still more than most. When going to the map page click on the gear icon in the upper left corner and select stale and offline repeaters as well and you’ll find a few more. If the owner hasn’t updated their repeater info in more than a year it will fall into the sale category. Cheers. -
I would go with @SteveShannon’s method. It’s probably the best and easiest solution… still @dosw’s post of $5 online Cantonese tutors could be effective after some effort and time and shouldn’t be discounted.

Check out this Bronco Sport forum. Several different approaches to your exact situation. One drilled the roof and he gives measurements as to where. Anyway looks like a few options to consider. Good luck.

Looks like they didn’t fill the notch with an excess of solder. I wouldn’t worry about it. If you’re concerned, leave the cable unattached and the antenna removed and take an ohm meter and test that there is no continuity between the center and shield. I’m sure it’s probably fine. edit- as @OffRoaderX said, test that it’s not shorted. This is good practice regardless of what the ends look like especially after dragging the cable through the firewall and what not.
-
The shout out to So Cal had me rolling . If the roof is metal then center of it is best but putting your antenna elsewhere isn’t going to kill your radio though. I use a bracket by the drivers side A pillar and it works perfectly fine and plenty of Jeep people put theirs in the rear off the spare mount. I agree with @SteveShannon on the antenna choices and would add the Comet SBB5 antenna works pretty good for Ham and GMRS as well.

I wonder if the button has gone bad. I realize the scan button is on the radio body but I would try unplugging the mic on the off chance there is a short in the cord and see if there’s any change. This probably isn’t much help but doesn’t hurt to try.
-
If you mean the speaker in the mic, there is no speaker in the mic, it’s just a mic. Or if you mean just being able to use the mic, as @SteveShannon said make sure it’s plugged in all the way.

This all reminds me of years back there was a company that if I’m remembering correctly had communications from their tractors on farms that sent digital info back to the tractor machinery company and illegally on GMRS frequencies. The FCC did take action. I’m not saying it’s them but it was two years ago Midland got a wavier.

Guest, asking for input on a Community communication system
WRUU653 replied to a topic in Guest Forum
One of the things you will find that is different in having a GMRS repeater is that it has to be opperated under one persons call sign unlike having a club call sign in Amateur radio. Your local Ham club is probably a good place to start for setting up a GMRS repeater. Just incase you didn't know there is one near this location called Herman Peak and another called SHUTTERS LANDING, to the south. The owners of those might also be worth speaking with. As @SteveShannon noted the linking of repeaters for GMRS is now officially frowned upon by the FCC. There is a collection of repeaters around Guerneville, Duncan Mills and Jenner California (I linked one of the larger ones). This area is similar to your area in terrain and proximity to the ocean and these are used for the community for fires, floods and local communication. You may like to get in touch with them. My wife and I like the Brookings area south of you so I'm always checking repeaters in the area and I have noticed more taking place. Good luck.
