I didn’t notice any GMRS clubs listed near you. As mentioned it looks like you have some good open repeaters near you that you and the family can use. If you’re looking for clubs I would possibly ask the owners of those repeaters or possibly look into Amateur Radio clubs near you. Sometimes you’ll find over lap and some repeaters are hosted by someone also in Amateur Radio.

What radio were you using before? How did you program the RA87? Are you using chirp or Retevis software? If so could we see the program? Have you checked your squelch setting??? What channel and tones are you using? Are you sure the repeater is on line? Some more info would help in troubleshooting. Did I mention the squelch?

What to do when you end up inside the quote block.

This is good info. A much simpler way than doing multiple individual quotes. Thanks for the tips @SteveShannon. -

The thread in question is not for the faint of heart… only the bravest knights seek this knowledge… what is your name? What is your quest? What is a fixed station - ahhhhh

I couldn’t remember this myself so I had to look it up but English on the identification is required. 95.1751 GMRS station identification. (b) The call sign must be transmitted using voice in the English language or international Morse code telegraphy using an audible tone. You can use a P.O. Box as stated. With GMRS if someone can hear that you are no where near home than they are also not likely anywhere near said home. While you do bring up a valid concern here are some ideas. Use an alarm system, camera security, house sitter, big dog, a pleasantly noisy neighbor, Burmese tiger traps (affiliate link below). Pun intended

I know a ham who's dog is frequently a third party operator. I only wish I could get mine interested in radios.

Obtaining Your Amateur License in the LA Area
WRUU653 replied to Haroldo's topic in Amateur Radio (Ham)
The system goes all the way north to San Luis Obispo County, up to Paso Robles now with the addition of PAPA 34 repeater. Congratulations, it's great to hear you had such a positive experience. -
@Raybestos, I appreciate you taking the time to respond and can relate to the experience in other products where I have had issues where others have not. I have not had any issues with tones on my Wouxun radios. I have the S88G, 935G plus, UV9PX, Q10H and now the 935H. I use them all with tones on repeaters, not so much on simplex. I certainly haven’t used every tone there is, though I did go and test the two you mentioned with no issues. You asked how often do people use tones and how often do they use their radios. Are you saying that the radios have trouble with tones after extended use? I would have expected if there was an issue with a particular tone it would be there from the start but I really don’t know. I do have decode set for most of my repeater entries so if the radio is on then I’m using it and they are on a lot. Sorry to hear about your experience and yeah I agree that customer service can put you off a brand.

Wouxun KG-935G Plus / Question about deleting a repeater I put in
WRUU653 replied to OverYonder's question in Technical Discussion
Pretty much, only thing I would say is since the menu starts on “one” you really only press it nine times to get to menu 10. Also it depends on what the repeaters tones are, but yes you got it right, you did in fact go to the menu I mentioned. As @SteveShannon mentioned previously you don’t need to put the RX (receive) tone in. Without it you will hear everything on the frequency with it you will only hear people on the repeater. It looks like you are set to go. Enjoy -

Wouxun KG-935G Plus / Question about deleting a repeater I put in
WRUU653 replied to OverYonder's question in Technical Discussion
You won’t communicate on simplex for a repeater. Simplex is for radio to radio and won’t use the offset. The offset makes you transmit at 467.xxx but the receive is the same at 462.xxx -
Wouxun KG-935G Plus / Question about deleting a repeater I put in
WRUU653 replied to OverYonder's question in Technical Discussion
Repeater 19 is channel 27 and 462.650. It will already have a built in offset of +5 on Tx but you will need to add the tones for the repeater you are using. Go to menus 9 and 10 to enter your tones. I have no issues with programming in this radio. You have a great GMRS radio. -
perhaps the repeater is in a time warp and you can call people in the past.

New to GMRS and can here people but cannot reach them.

I think it’s good to remember that it’s radio and radio isn’t private. You can’t control how people want to use it or what people want to use it and certainly not if they are within the rules. Respectfully, there are cell phones for conversations you would rather were just between you and your people. I do understand where you are coming from regarding your wife being made uncomfortable and that is unfortunate that happened to be sure and shouldn’t. If on simplex and you don’t want to be intruded on you could set up tones to try and eliminate some unwanted bother. As for someone asking for your call sign, I have not heard anyone do this on GMRS simplex ever but if you are on simplex you could just as easily tell them you are on FRS and not to worry about it. I personally would expect that two people talking without call signs was just that. However if you’re using a repeater, well at the very least the owner certainly has the right to ask you for a call sign, after all it is their equipment. I suspect where the population is denser you might have more to deal with. Where I am there isn’t a lot of traffic on GMRS and seems to be enough room for all. You will hear occasional conversation on GMRS repeaters often it will be someone on vacation and they are looking to see if they can reach it from where they are and someone local will jump on and respond. You might hear some simplex traffic that will be a couple or friends traveling in separate vehicles, the occasional farm communication or even a daycare. Once I heard a young daughter giving dad a play by play report of where she and her mom were to her dad, “now we are at the post office” lol, adorable. I never hear anyone unwanted jump in those conversations. That’s just my experience where I am. -
It may be an old thread but this is a unique use that I had not heard or thought of. Thanks for sharing.

You may be hearing this repeater, as previously mentioned you will need to put the tones in your radio for repeaters. You might not reach it from your location, keep in mind a repeater can reach out further than you might just due to its height, power and antenna. Mostly height. If you haven't used the repeater page before just know that you have to sign in there separate from the forum even though it's the same sign in to see the tones. Welcome and good luck.

I also aced my Technician test and I had not studied for the General so when they offered to let me take it I kind of wanted to go out on the high of having done perfect so I didn't take it. Now I just haven't been consistant in putting the time in due to outside distractions. I won't say I wished I had because who knows and I did enjoy the drive home that day. I'll get there. I don't think it's a hobby where you'll ever know it all, at least I don't think I will. I kind of like that. always something to learn. -
Couldn't have said it better.
