  1. Welcome @WSFH602, great questions. I’d say I wish I knew that it was going to be a rabbit hole of buying radios but I think part of me suspected. As for links here’s a few line of sight tool to see what your line of sight is to local repeaters. Chirp for programming. Radio Reference for scanner frequencies. MyGMRS for repeater listenings. Intro to GMRS video by our own @marcspaz.
  2. I have accidentally done this with my icom 2730A, easy to forget when you usually use the controls on the mic and sound is still coming from one side. Similar but different I once forgot that I still had the programming cable in, which on my radio uses one of the two speaker ports and couldn’t figure out why there was no sound while bench testing. We all have those moments.
  3. Volume knob? Only half joking because It’s easy to bump and not realize when there’s two.
  4. Blasphemy I say!
  5. Just to clarify a couple of things and recap some that have been mentioned. If you are using a GMRS radio you wont have to set the offset, it's automatically set when using repeater channels. Also be sure you are on a repeater channel (23-30, 31-38...) when programming for a repeater and not on simplex (it happens). As mentioned the Premium Membership gives you certain privileges on the MYGMRS sites but has nothing to do with access to repeaters. Sign in on the map/repeater site the same you do here, although they are both MYGMRS it requires a separate log in from the forum site. Then find the repeater you want to access and request permission if it isn't already open to use with the tones posted. I may have added some things you know already but not knowing your level of knowledge here these are some common things that people sometimes miss that people who have been here take for granted that new people will know. Oh yeah, and welcome @BradleyRN to mygmrs.
  6. To clarify while I said dual receive, I actually meant simultaneously receive. Which I don't have turned on on any of my radios anymore because I found it annoying and confusing when two channels came in at once. That would certainly make sense.
  7. Looks like it's right up on the entrance, are they using it to hold open the front door?
  8. I suspect that transmitting on A to the repeater while listening to B on simplex could create issues with desensning and possibly feed back if you have dual receive on. I haven't tried it myself.
  9. The KG-935G plus, the KG-S88G and the KG-Q10G all have talk around just to name a few. All are Part 95(E) approved... so yeah no, you are incorrect on this matter.
  10. Some radios also have what is known as “talk around”, this basically lets you transmit on the same channel in simplex (around the repeater) to see if you can reach the other party without going through the repeater. This can be helpful because it maintains the tones you have set for the repeater but uses simplex. Also you don’t need to be monitoring simplex separately on the B channel while using A or lets say you are using a radio that isn’t dual receive like the KG-S88G for instance, you can hit a side button to activate the “talk around” feature and see if you can reach the other party on simplex even though they are still set to receive from the repeater. It’s a pretty common feature these days and perfect for the scenario you described.
  11. @Sparks46, I can relate to going through stuff from a grandfather and the connection one can have there. Oh and yeah what @SteveShannon said . 73 to you sir and welcome to the forum.
  12. My point was not that someone shouldn’t care but that they are free to care and be interested in what they want. I’m not sure you understood where I was coming from. Perhaps I don’t understand your point. My father is from Michigan for what it’s worth.
  13. I can’t help but see the irony of someone in Southern California who is reading a thread clearly labeled about line A and C which they themselves are no where near questioning why someone in Utah cares about line A and C. Why would you want know things? Why wouldn’t you?
  14. Well apparently it's suppose to but mine does not. I'm trying to find a fix with the people at Buy Two Way Radios. I tried doing a factory reset and while it's reseting most everything it's not everything... Apologies for inadvertently highjacking the thread.
  15. Same here. Other than that it’s a good radio, IP67, quad band, feels rugged. Edit- just to be sure I didn’t have something off I checked the manual and they show it on there display page (20) but no where else, and it’s not on the screen… at least not on mine. Perhaps I’ll reach out to “buy two way radios” as to why it’s not there but it’s in the manual. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.
  16. I do like the duel PTT as well. The one thing I wish the Q10H/G had is an indicator if it was the top or bottom channel that received last. Helps when responding to a call when you weren’t looking at the screen.
  17. I'll echo a lot of what @WRHS218 has said if not all. I also have the ham version of this (KG-UV9PX) and it's a decent radio. I have had no issues with so far. I use it often for amateur radio. It is a bit more to navigate. For GMRS though I also prefer the KG-935G Plus hands down. It's just a good radio. I would add it's slightly easier to see the 935 screen outdoors than the UV9GX. Something to consider if you plan to use your radios outdoors. additional opinion that no one asked for... I like simple for my GMRS use. I also have the KG-S88G and I was looking at the new KG-S65G, I was thinking this would be a good radio for handing to the wife or other non radio geek types. I just wish they had made it IP67 like the other S series radios.
  18. Sure, maybe you did but what about that poor antenna?
  19. I also have the Wouxun Q10H and really like it. Since the question was about GMRS radios its sister the Wouxun Q10G has both NOAA weather alerts and is rated IP-67.
  20. The only repeater I see on the map near you on repeater #22 says that permission is required and they don’t list the tones. ??? Where did you get the info for 141.3? Edit: The reason I ask is are you sure you have the right tone set? Also if this is the same repeater than yes permission would be needed and they should give you the proper tones when they grant permission.
  21. That could be true, I wouldn’t doubt that, but that’s not the same as they have no way to do it and just because they haven’t doesn’t make it okay if you don’t have permission. Which was my point all along, not much more to say on the subject.
  22. Scofflaws, ne’er do wells, ruffians… the linkers were a mad bunch snapping their nasty antenna whips, growling at old women and kicking rocks at children. Then law came to town, a man with a badge THE FCC!!! …sorry I was imagining a 60’s TV show that never was carry on.
  23. Well said, I had to quote you because I wasn’t able to give a like and a laughing emoji and the term “jackass hunting” made me laugh out loud. I got to clean up this coffee now
