  1. Try turning the RX tones off on both radios, run the test with both radios again. If you start receiving then it may be that one of your tones was wrong, in any event you should be able to hear all incoming audio on the channel and be able to verify your TX is opening the repeater.
  2. Silly question maybe but do you have your GMRS license? If so try Rich again https://mygmrs.com/contact
  3. I also thought you had something to add, doesn’t appear OP ever jumped back in. That’s okay too. Not all threads turn into spirited conversations.

    Seeking advice

The third Garmin I listed is a GMRS radio as well as having satellite capabilities. As @WRWE456 mentioned GMRS is line of sight. One thing to consider is battery life and charging capabilities on the trail while keeping weight down. The Garmin in reach 2 will give you good battery life and satellite texting and that emergency button and it’s small. Do some research and figure out what is most important for your wife’s needs. Having your outside support will be a great help for her.

    Seeking advice

I would take a look at some of the Garmin products for such a trip. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/765374 https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/890109 https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/533999
  6. ? I’m not falling for that ? p.s. congrats
  7. I'm not emotional about it at all, it just feels like we're not getting the full story. Just like a salesman or politician to avoid the question with a lame redirect.
  8. It's less syllables to just say I have tacos or I need tacos though... and why would you risk such an important thing being misunderstood??
  9. You do come across as someone who might have an agenda. just asking, do you? Do you actually have an experimental license? Are you in development to sell something? "simplex users cannot expect interference-free operation". It sure feels like someone is trying to sell me something I don't want.
  10. Welcome, you’ll get there before long.
  11. A pair inexpensive HT’s is how it starts. The next thing you know it’s many many radios later… lol ? welcome ?
  12. This is the only case I see as a way to do this if it’s done. I don’t have any concerns with how existing analog affects digital. I’m concerned with the idea digital affecting existing analog and I don’t think CTCSS is a reasonable solution. That’s like building a stadium next door and telling people if they don’t like the lights at night they should build a bigger fence (sorry about not being able to see out of your windows). You mention the the rule change FRS/GMRS. I don’t think GMRS was a problem with new FRS/GMRS radio back when this happened it was the new radios impacting the existing GMRS. Have we learned nothing from this blunder? I do appreciate the exchange of ideas discussed here. I think if this were to happen it needs to be solution that works for everyone.
  13. I wouldn’t say that, you definitely added to the ball moving in the right direction, I couldn’t find anything on this at all. Your info with Steve’s eye for detail could be a win for OP?
  14. All of your statements seem to focus on your idea that this won’t interfere with analog repeaters. Not all communications are through repeaters. Why should people be forced to use CTCSS in simplex?
  15. I must admit I started to ask another question and then decided I should read that pdf first @Lscott, I found it to be informative. Thanks.
  16. I do agree that analog will always be here but are you saying the two wouldn't interfere with each other?
  17. You know what Dirty Harry said about opinions? ? But seriously as Steve mentioned the regulations are clear. As for emergencies I remember seeing something on tv when I was young it went like this… “if this had been an actual emergency you would have been blown clean out of the room”?
  18. This is close to how things are here north of you. We have a few really good repeaters with some new ones added recently. It’s not saturated but spread out giving better coverage which is nice. It’s still fairly quiet though. Some FRS construction workers, Kids on lower FRS channels (they’re having fun), preschool workers, people vacation traveling… but relatively quiet especially on the repeaters. Most traffic is still on ham. Something for everyone.
  19. It seems someone always wants to change GMRS. Other ideas I don’t think would work… painting two lanes for cars but trucks get there own overlapping lane to drive down the middle… yeah but it’s more lanes and cars can fit there, doesn’t it sound great??
  20. And of course no one will have to buy new radios to use this because the old ones will still be compatible with these new proposed specs and the FRS bubble packs out there shouldn’t be an issue either… It sounds like something that the people who sell radios would be behind though. ?
