SvenMarbles Posted November 2 Report Posted November 2 So I’m tired of being yelled at by boomer hams for having Chinese crap radios. What’s a good non-CCR GMRS radio to get? WSEZ and WRPG745 2 Quote
SteveShannon Posted November 2 Report Posted November 2 How does anyone know you have a Credence Clearwater Revival unless you tell them? Practice saying Motorola. You want an ECR? Expensive Chinese Radio, or do you want something not made in China? Wouxun is an ECR that’s pretty highly considered. It doesn’t sound any different than a UV5R though. My Garmin Rhino is made in Taiwan, which is the other Chinese government, but definitely not our communist foe. It’s very well built, but will not allow the antenna to be interchanged. It has the best screen of any radio I have. Paulie, WRUU653, RayDiddio and 3 others 3 3 Quote

A ccr sounds just as good as a 5000 radio on gmrs. Let me tell you some one will always take issue no matter what you run. If you get a $150 woxoun some one with a $500 Motorola will tell you the woxoun is junk. If you get a used Motorola some one will tell you your old radio is junk and you need to step up to a brand new $5,000 ht. If you do that, some one will tell you you need a new $13,000 ht. THe moment you do that some one else will say Motorola is junk and you need a kenwood or icom. And in the end NO ONE listening will know the difference at all. Just use the radio that suits your needs. If you’re scratchy or noisy it’s an antenna thing or a line of sight thing or you’re just a little to far away. when I do blind radio checks on the hand full of local repeaters no one has any clue what I’m running and my $35 uv9r pro ALWAYS wins out over woxoun and Motorola. I could whisper something to my kids when they were kids and if they didn't like what I was saying, they would say I was yelling. Furthermore, me and every one of my ham friends, in addition to expensive Yaesus, Kenwoods and Icoms, own at least one, if not multiple CCRs. And we're certainly not going to tell people we're on an Icom if we're really on a Baofeng. We're proud of being cheap fiscally-responsible. WSEZ, WRXB215, WRUU653 and 1 other 3 1 Quote

I was thinking it odd that someone would do this when everyone around where I am has some inexpensive radios as well as their expensive ones and I don’t hear anyone giving grief over using them. If HAM, Yaseu, Kenwood, ICOM are all decent solid units that have been in the market for years. If GMRS... I wont comment as this forum is a CCR happy forum. I use Motorola Equipment and Midland for my Jeep. Midland for KISS method and Motorola for my normal GMRS conversations. Quote
WRYZ926 Posted November 2 Report Posted November 2 I wouldn't worry about it and use what you like and fits your budget. All GMRS radios are made in China, yes this includes Midland too. When it comes to amateur band radios, even some Yaesu radios are made in China. And just because a radio says Icom on it doesn't mean they are any better, depending on the model. I have an Icom IC-T10 and it is no better than the Baofeng UV-5R. Both are susceptible to interference and front end over load. My Wouxun radios are better and do not have those issues. An example is that the IC-T10 and UV-5R will pick up interference from my computer monitors when tuned to 70cm or GMRS frequencies where my Wouxun, TYT and Quansheng radios do not pick up interference when tuned to 70cm or GMRS frequencies. Here is a photo I like to send to guys when they give anyone trouble for using CCR radios. WSEZ, WSAF837, SteveShannon and 1 other 1 3 Quote

RIPPER238 Posted November 2 Report Posted November 2 It also seems the non crap china radios are not made in the US ether in some cases and are just nowhere as capable feature wise. Loved my Midland MTX but my cheep Tidradio H3 blows it away feature flexibility and in ease of use. Only thing it lacks is power. Deciding between Wouxun KG-Q10G and/or KG-1000 since i want the most capabilities and no US made radeo within reason seems to comes close. WSEZ and RayDiddio 1 1 Quote

A bit scratchy in the speaker, but it gets loud. I have a Wouxun XSKG20G and it doesn't get half as loud as the HT does. Now I also have the H3 setup to listen to the nearby airport which is pretty cool. CCR RayDiddio, RIPPER238 and WSEZ 3 Quote

Yes the KG-Q10H can be unlocked. I won't get into the subject of unlocked radios on GMRS. The KG-1000G is strictly GMRS only and cannot be unlocked. Wouxun does make the KG-UV980P quad band amateur mobile which the KG-1000G is based on. I haven't messed with the KG-UV980P so can't comment on it. RIPPER238, WRUU653, WSEZ and 1 other 4 Quote

But that damn Queen made me order a RockyTalkie 5W radio... dammit. To the OP: Screw anyone telling you the radios aren't good enough and as others said, tell them it is an icom or a kenwood or a yaesu. They can't tell. WSEZ 1 Quote

Review TIDRADIO TD-H3 - Miklor Features to cost makes it a great radio. It performs well in all of my uses. The first set I had couldn't open repeaters, but the replacement do and continue to do so. It is small, light weight and even sounds decent. My set even tested clean on a harmonics test using my TinySA Ultra, though the wattage is a bit under by almost a full watt compared to published specs. Very inexpensive and they work well. In my case its been awhile since my last "new" radio and this was a cheap way to get back into radios with all the new features and capabilities. Like BT cloning and an easy to use app as well as more frequency options unlike my old Radio Shack. It was so easy to use it sparked the radio enthusiast in me again and i'm looking to delve a little deeper. It's performed well and served every purpose i have tried it out in so far. It does have FCC certification BTW. RayDiddio 1 Quote

I was (and still am) pretty much a noob as far as radios… and I had my new H3… I just went in to browse since it was all new to me. I asked the sales guy a few questions here and there and he asked what I was using so I pulled my little H3 off my belt and showed him… his response “Yeah well those are not legal”… I showed him the certification under the battery and he says, “sometimes they just re use numbers from something else”. I went home and looked it up on the FCC site. The old sad ham was full of $h1t. Kinda turned me off to that place. WRXB215, Whiskey363, RayDiddio and 1 other 4 Quote
Guest Posted November 3 Report Posted November 3 Your experience reminds me of a post on another forum about that kind of behavior likely costing the business customers and if you sent your experience to the company owner, along with your evidence might make a welcome change at that business. It would be like walking into a gun shop and being asked to display your open carry weapon of choice and then having representative tell you "we don't serve those kind here, 'git out". At least being told to "get out" would be direct instead of chasing you away with b.s. Quote
