    Is he for real?

There's more gravy than the grave about him? Naw, Randy's ok (not that he needs me to defend him). He doesn't suffer fools much, he's not afraid to look foolish. He understands moreso than most, I think, that GMRS is not a hobby in the vein that amateur radio is but a communications service designed for local, point to point contacts. His rails against the sad hams of the world is more a fight against pedantic and priggish responses to his YouTube videos; and he has a point there as the SH behavior is rampant on many FB pages and other social media platforms and is doing more to harm that hobby/service than most any other thing. And he does know his GMRS radios! Tests them, calls them as he sees them...

    Is he for real?

A sense of humor is a handy thing to have on the interwebs. As the Queen of All Things GMRS, he brings information and laughs. The people that don't get that probably have a tough time going through day to day life.

    Is he for real?

Ok I'm not sure what to think about him but he's facing back lashes for some of his postings. IMHO as far as it goes his attacks calling people sad hams is getting out of control.

Don Rickles made a very nice career insulting people. I hear he was a nice guy in real life.

    Is he for real?

From the perspective of an amateur radio operator... operator... I love Randy's videos. I even have a paid subscription with him to help contribute in some small way to the equipment testing and content creation. Truth is, his content is funny as hell and very helpful to many, including me. I love that he doesn't take crap from anyone and his socio-political humor is great. I have had the pleasure of having some private chat messages / emails between him and I also... and learned pretty quickly that he is a great guy. People seem to lose track of the point that there is an entertainment persona and then how he is in his day-to-day life. Like my wife reminds me when I start griping about inaccuracies in movies and TV shows... 'It's for entertainment. Just let it go.' LOL

  7. NO! Not the fart sound! I got in trouble with a ham club using their 2m linked network once because of that. I was in a conversation and let one rip while I had the mic keyed. The computer system supporting the link read the sound as a digital data burst shut-down command which turned the network off. Talk about a bunch of sad hams!

Hey, you're new and only been a GMRS licensee for 4 months and with a post like that not having any respect for the Queen you more than likely will never make the "Righteous Dude" List.

    Is he for real?

Anyone who watches him on YouTube should get that he has nothing against the amateur radio service - He hangs with Josh from HRCC after all, it's the knowitalli'vebeenahamfor30yearsandyou'reanidiotanditwon'twork crowd he likes to send up with the Sad Ham moniker. And they need it! And I have been a ham for 30+ years, believe me I do NOT know it all, hihi.... And I also get that thing from my wife and son when we watch movies! The hand comes up to block the

    Is he for real?

Most of the people he calls sad hams walk right into it. If you take the time to understand what he’s saying you might even agree. Yup, sometimes he has gone against the grain but for the most part he’s helpful.

  16. Fair, from that picture. 1. yes, and it's literally not a problem. It's got plenty of volume. Most of the time I have it to less than half. And the speaker is mounted under that surface so it's not like it's actually touching the seat. 2. It's not as close as it looks. It's not super clear in the picture but I have the bracket velcroed to the console. So it has the same air-gap to the heat sink as it would mounted to any other surface. So far it's been there a couple months. Maybe I don't spend as much time on the PTT button as others, but even after having a, for me, lengthy conversation, the case was warm but never hot to the touch. Even on high power.

The TD-H3s have 2 different roger beeps. 1 is a traditional 'melody', the other is like that old Motorola noise. Some radios have a 'Repeater Confirmation' or 'Squelch Tail' setting that will, near as I can tell, make the radio transmit an extremely brief burst of static similar to (but not nearly as ear piercing as) the Motorola sound, that I find less annoying. I have a couple of radios that really make zero sound when you let off the PTT that I have used that option on so there's SOME audible indication, without a full on roger beep.

  19. I wouldn't overlook the Midland GXT67 Pro for a GMRS Handheld Portable radio. It would be a better quality radio, than any CCR. Just so you know, it's a simple radio with very few features but definitely will get the job done better in performance. And, you can ask the GMRS queen.

I'm gonna find a way to make a radio that sends a fart sound instead of a roger beep. As soon as I finish cyberattacking the ARRL, that is.

  31. Radioddity's programming software works. It's a little clunky, like a lot of CPSs, and doesn't allow keyboard-shortcut copy and pasting, but will, using a mouse. Annoying, but if you're like me, once you get the thing programmed the cable won't get used again for years. RE mounting it, it's small and light enough that you might be able to get away with some good Velcro...in the space between the center console and the seat.

If your radio has a DTMF Key Pad, maybe you can fake a "Roger Beep" by depressing a couple or few DTMF keys. A 16-button key pad would give a few more options. Another thought would be if you come up with a sequence of numbers to fake the "roger beep" maybe you can program that in your radio as a PT-T ID and Trail it to send out when unkeying.

    Miata?

I run a KG-905G in my race car with a Midland 'ghost' antenna (and a helmet 'headset' setup using semi-custom ear buds and a mic on the chin bar). ...I'm not sure that's what you're going for. For testing, I reached out on a couple local repeaters at 20 and 50 miles. It works at the track pretty well too In the past I ran a Nagoya UT-72G mag-mount on the strip of body work between the rear of the top and the trunk lid, and that worked well too.

    Miata?

I always hate when someone is completely incapable of grasping the concept that different people have different wants, needs, and priorities than themselves. The only thing more perplexing than that, is how willing 'some people' are to demonstrate to everyone how they are totally devoid of these basic mental abilities. But.. that's just me...

  49. The 22 FRS frequencies are exactly the same as the first 22 GMRS frequencies. There’s absolutely no difference in the frequencies but there are differences in the power limits. None of the 22 are reserved exclusively for FRS.

All repeaters listed here are connected to the ORN and MYGMRS network. If you are connected via a node assignment list it here (repeater name, Freq, location, and repeater owner) DO NOT list pl tone, if repeater is listed on mygmrs.com include link to the repeater owner directly for members to goto for usage request.
