    GRMS Needed?

Short answer: yes, you're wrong. Longer, more nuanced answer: It depends on where you are and how comfortable you are being solely reliant on cell service if something goes wrong. I spent most of last week in areas with at best spotty (but usually no) cell coverage running GMRS radios for car-to-car and hiker-to-hiker comms. Worked great. FRS radios would work for most of that, but there are places without cell coverage where I can talk through some of our mountain-top repeaters that, were I or someone I was with to get hurt, we could call for help even without cell service. That's an edge case of an edge case, mind, but it's nice to have as a backup.

I did and I put power poles on the plug end as well so I can still use the cigarette lighter power.

  6. I don't know about the rest of the country. The linked systems around me were shut down (unlinked) for a while (maybe a couple of months). The national one is back up tonight; that's all I know right now (I've been monitoring mostly 2m for hurricane relief). I'll listen more to see if I hear discussion about it.

After being accused of amoralling my tires by our beloved Queen, and then I responded to that allegation saying it was the glare off his freshly polished front chrome bumper on his "Notarubicon". Today, I took my Jeep for it's annual ceramic treatment and to have the Arizona Pinstripes buffed out and of course they a fantastic job as usual. Unfortunately, and after I specified, "No Armorall" treatment on the tires so I don't get ridiculed and lose all respect by not only our beloved Queen, also by my fellow Jeep Creep Friends. They even armoralled the Spare Tire and the damn steps of my rock sliders. Now it is very slippery climbing into the vehicle. I hope I can gain some respect back.

  10. Just got these ear pros with the walkie-talkie attached to them. These things are pretty cool. One of my other hobbies that I partake in a lot is guns and shooting and wanted to get some ear pro that didnt break the bank, so I grabbed these at Sportsman. Little did I know that these radios/ear pro not only communicate with each other, but they also transmit to FRS/GMRS radios! I know, I'm slow lol. But these are pretty cool. I was able to transmit to a Baofeng GMRS radio with no issue and the audio is really clear. Seeing as I only have one pair, I have not been able to talk to another person with this ear pro (I know I need friends lol), but man these things are cool. Would for sure recommend them to anyone who needs hearing protection while talking with others. I know there are ways to connect your radios to these different types of ear pros, but I like this setup so much more. It is much cleaner with very little in the way and no wires hanging down. They are marketed as FRS so the power on them isnt going to get you across town, thats for sure, and you can not program them as far as I see, but it is nice for short range comms with friends and family. They are FRS so really anyone can use them. This radio also has sub-channels that can be selected to only receive transmissions from other radios set to the same channel and sub-channel (which I think you can only do with other Walkers, still playing around with them) and they also have PRI or priority channel set-up which I think is pretty cool too. I have not tried out the VOX feature yet, but I think that might be better used for individuals who both have this same set up. Anyone else out there have these or tried them out? I like them so far and I am going to take them to my ham club at the school and show the kids, I think they will get a kick out of them. I paid probably about $70 for them, which isnt bad for what they do. Would love to hear others input on them.

  11. Uhhh....no..... I am not going to ask or demand that the FCC allow unnecessary clogging up of the eight few channels we have for repeater and 50W simplex use, thereby turning GMRS into something it was never even remotely intended to be.

After posting my test results on the performance/evaluation of the Firestik II antennae about 2-3 weeks ago, and of course there were forum members that said the Firestik II antennae where one of the worst antennae and the placement of the antenna on my Dutch-Corporation Owned American made Non Asian Wrangler Rubi was also one of the worst locations, and that I should be using a NMO Trunk Lip Mount clipped to the rear edge of the Hood at the cowl, and a C27 base load antenna, for better performance results in the Farz. Well, I decided to bite into that carrot and I purchased two Antenna Specialist/Antenex/Laird/T E Connectivity C27 Base Load antennae and the NMO Trunk Lip-Mount and I conducted my Farz test today identical to the test as I did with the two Firestiks. I ran the same route and used the test point locations. The transmitting and the receiving vehicles, radios, noise floor level were identical, as the previous test. The C27 antennae were tuned and the VSWRs were in the very low 1's. Today's results revealed that the Firestik II antenna outperformed the C27 base load antennas. Just to recap the test with the Firestiks, I was able to have readable communication at 2.25 miles in the AM mode and 3.25 miles in the FM mode. With the C27 antennae, the AM mode revealed readable communication up to the 1.25 miles and the FM mode revealed readable communication up to 2.5 miles. Guess what my Jeep Creep friends, I will be using the following antenna for my CB Radio communications: because this did not work to be the best:

  15. It's right where it's always been. Make sure you are logged-in and don't have any pop-up blockers or other wonky Windows security stuff blocking everything.

  16. Could be CH26 or 18RP I don't remember what it is on that radio even though I have a couple. Don't worry about the offset, as long as you are on a repeater channel, the offset is already set. Forget about Zello. Request the tones from the owner. Once you have the tones, read the manual for how to set them on the radio. You can also use the CPS which is easier than manually programming. At this point, if you have a problem, start a new thread describing exactly what you have done and what problem you have encured.

Jeep is owned by Stellantis, a Dutch corporation. So it’s literally a Dutch car company building Jeeps in Toledo, Ohio from 70% US parts and 30% foreign parts.

  20. I haven't taken time to monitor the pay-to-play group that I used to be a member of - too busy following NC hurricane relief. I agree that this sort of emergency/disaster is not a good reason to link; stand-alone repeaters might even be more useful in that scenario.. That other one is the one I was referring to. I heard the former regular user from the Chicago area say he was glad to be back so I know there was some kind of link active. And they did mention the same network by name but no details.

    Db20-g cigarette plug

You CAN. But unless you'll never use the cigarette lighter plug, it might make sense to pick up a socket adapter and wire that to the Anderson connector so you can preserve the stock wiring. If you never use and never plan to use the "damn" cigarette plug, then yeah go nuts.

    Base station radio

That's okay. We all have other things going on in our lives. And yes you are correct that the DX Engineering tilt over base is well made. I've looked at cheaper alternatives and the quality just wasn't there. I would make my own if I still had access to a machine shop and a big enough press brake. It takes a good sized press brake to bend 1/8" thick stainless steel. The one plant I worked at had 65 and 80 ton press brakes for bending/forming 1/4" steel.

Sorry for the delay, but you are correct, I did get it from DX engineering. Hi quality materials, a little costly but worth it. I have shoulder issues, so an easy way to tilt antenna was important. I have seen less expensive solutions, but doubt if you can find something with this quality. best of luck

  28. @WSEZ869 Due to some recent FCC "action" if you will, many linked GMRS systems are now unlinked. There are some that are still linked but they have never been widely publicized and likely never will be. You kind of have to be in-the-know or do some scanning to find them. Good luck.

I assume that the driveshaft that broke was an OEM driveshaft and not a Tom Woods, Adam's, or a JE Reel driveshaft? When I use a vehicle beyond the limits of grocery getting, I always replace the weak OEM parts that normally fail under extreme conditions as a piece-of-mind thing. I did the samething with my racecars. I replaced all my cheap Jeep weak soon-to-be-broken parts such as all the suspension and steering and driveline components with heavy-duty parts immediately after I got my Jeep. It barely had 2,000 miles on it when I started ripping off the cheap stuff that will break on the trail.

  32. Apparently your radio always thinks that B is the sub-channel. Perhaps when dual watch is disabled that’s how it works?
    1 point
  33. Dual watch simply means both tuners are being monitored (watched). On my radios if I turn off dual watch only one tuner is shown and heard.

  40. Well Id start with the map on this website and see if any are listed. Next I'd listen to every pair via a HT or mobile. Next I'd listen to each pair at the location and antenna you want oput the repeater on. From there I'd pick a channel/.

  43. Oh this one is easy, there are 24 repeaters part of the "North Georgia GMRS" network covering every repeater channel twice, some four times over, covering literally the entire northern half of Georgia and part of Eastern Tennessee I get that it's fun to do this and have a network you can get your voice over 700 square miles without having to learn radio theory or whatever is on the technician class exam, but the network is mostly 10 guys who live within 15 miles of each other ragchewing all day. Except this weekend, they're going to do radio relay for the cops at a Jeep event and that will be linked into the entire network, so that's a really good efficient use of all those channels There should be a middle ground between no linked repeaters and what some of these guys are doing. It would absolutely make sense to be able to link two repeaters on two sides of a mountain for example. But, do we really need the ability to order a radio off Amazon, key up, and tie up 8 channels between Knoxville and Orlando? But, my favorite part of that network is how it's essentially just a slush fund for the clique at the top. It's a non-profit that has no reports to the IRS, charges hundreds of dollars a year, and doesn't own any of the equipment. When the FCC rules say you can only use funds for paid repeaters for the repeaters themselves, they have a suspiciously well produced YouTube channel and well funded video studios

  49. Although GMRS is in the name of the site, the site also caters to ham radio interests. Radio is radio. If you’re so up-tight that the inclusion of helpful information about a radio triggers you, then you probably aren’t getting much enjoyment out of anything. Learn to ignore posts about non-GMRS radios.
