Recommended GMRS radio for vehicle
AdmiralCochrane and one other reacted to nokones for a topic
The Midland MXT500 can be PC programmed with software and is the only GMRS radio that can be programmed by either the Radio Menu or PC Software. The programming for the MXT105, MXT115, MXT275, and MXT575 are radio menu driven.2 points -

Superheterodyne vs wattage
SteveShannon reacted to WRUU653 for a topic
I would add the post being chastised for all caps is just shy of three years old and they haven’t been logged on for a year and a half so I doubt it’s going to be a high priority. @SteveShannon funny you mention drafters, that’s what I always think of when I see all caps. For the record my label maker is always set for all caps. HAPPY NEW YEAR or a belated BOXING DAY.1 point -
Superheterodyne vs wattage

I worked with a bunch of utility drafters for a few years. Every one of them had their caps lock turned on 24/7 be. I had to adjust my thinking. They were one of the best bunch of people I’ve ever worked with.1 point -
Intro to GMRS - Video
SteveShannon reacted to marcspaz for a topic
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad it helped. Im considering doing two dedicated videos for repeaters and tones. For the time being, feel free to search the existing threads and ask questions. There are many knowledgeable people who loved to help.1 point -
Hello Marc! I just got my GMRS license and really didn't know too much. Your video has helped me tremendously in understanding concept. I'm still not totally understanding about repeaters but in time and research, I feel that I will be able to communicate using a repeater. I'm still confused on tones, but again, time and research will provide answers. Thank You for the information!1 point

This has been my experience, as well. There are better radios out there for a lot more. And there are worse radios for a lot more. There are not many better radios for less. I use mine with the stock antenna or a 771 depending on the situation. The UV5G Plus is the GMRS-correct, type approved version, of course.1 point

I can! It's quiet right now but I heard some chatter earlier. I have my tones set and tx that I'm monitoring so hopefully when it picks up again, I'll actually be able to communicate. I mainly got into all this for survival, prepping, camping, ect., communications but I do love the audible comradery in these peaceful times lol. My area is really hilly and forested so I'm really thankful for a communication method that is in my hands and not relying on a company's cell tower or satellite to not fail. I'm saving up money for my own public use repeater for my area. I love the idea of handing my wife a radio as she heads off to work and I want to have as much coverage as possible but also want to buy one and as cheesy as it may sound, inform my community about it and encourage them to get licensed and buy some radios for emergencies in our area.1 point

help needed in adding a GMRS repeater on a Tidradio H8 Gen 2
SteveShannon reacted to WSGF380 for a question
After all of the kind support, I believe that the repeater in question has been successfully programmed on my HT. Although I didn't get a human response after doing a radio check a few times, I did hear the squelch tail. So, a big thanks to Randy, Steve, and Sven!1 point -
So I did this and the signal was much stronger on the Baofeng which lends credence to what you suggested! apparently so! I am absolutely amazed right now. I have been on the edge of sanity over this and @SteveShannon, you are an absolute legend. I knew this issue had to be trivial, but I only first heard of GMRS a few days before Christmas so I have so much to learn. I can't thank you enough for you sharing the knowledge!1 point

I know @OffRoaderX has compared the Midland and Melowave ghost antennas against each other and also against other antennas. I also tested the Melowave Shadow (ghost) antenna against my Tram 1184 and the Nagoya UT-72G. The Melowave outperforms the Nagoya. The Tram is definitely the best out of those three. You can run a longer antenna if you want. You will have to worry about the longer antennas getting damaged easier and also have to deal with them if you park in a garage.1 point

You guys did me right with the recommendation for the Comet SBB-1. I finally got around to putting it through its paces. It was spot-on all the way up and down the 2m and 70cm bands. The highest SWR I got was 1.3:1 with most of them being 1.0:1. It even did well on the GMRS frequencies, which are technically "out of band" for this antenna, but I'm not going to argue with those numbers. It's on a mag mount in the middle of my roof, which is probably a factor, but the Nagoya was too, and its performance was okay, but not impressive.1 point

Hey! I found a difference in the new 240817 vs 240702 firmware. The signal meter actually works. On all versions previous to the 817 firmware when you received a signal the meter showed 4 bars. Today I just noticed that I was receiving a signal with 1 bar and it fluctuated to 2 bars. So it's actually showing signal strength instead of just receiving a signal.1 point

Permission for using gmrs call sign by those not in same household
marcspaz reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
The regulations say nothing about being in the same household. They simply say: Any individual who holds an individual license may allow his or her immediate family members to operate his or her GMRS station or stations. Immediate family members are the licensee's spouse, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, parents, grandparents, stepparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. But they do require that the licensed individual retain control of his/her stations while being used by someone they have authorized.1 point -
You seem to be pretty obsessed with regulations and what other people do. I’m gonna find an old “Junior Trooper” sticker badge and send it to you. Be sure you wear it whenever you wear your Radio Shack helmet, the one with the flashing red light on top. …..but only when you’re taking enforcement action! Edit: below from your Sept post. You called the FCC?! Man, life is too short to be wound this tightly.1 point

Without attempting to flash this radio with another Baofeng's firmware (which was recently discussed here in another thread), the GM-15, like it clone, the Radioddity GM-30, do not have Chirp profiles available for them. On a related note, you can use the Radioddity GM-30 updated CPS software to program your Baofeng GM-15 radio.1 point

Best gmrs handheld radio?
Raybestos reacted to back4more70 for a topic

Let's take that assertion by assertion: "Almost all GMRS radios also support FRS frequencies..." That would be true if you said that GMRS and FRS share the same frequencies entirely, except that FRS radios can't transmit on the repeater input frequencies. All current GMRS handheld radios support all FRS frequencies. FRS and GMRS use all of the same frequencies except for repeaters. GMRS mobile can't transmit on 8-14. "Channels 8-14 on a typical 22 channel consumer radio are reserved exclusively for FRS" That's just incorrect. GMRS handheld radios may transmit on all 22 channels so long as they don't exceed 500mw on 8-14 and stay narrowband on 8-14, or 5w on 1-7. Only handheld GMRS may transmit on 8-14 (and FRS). No mobiles. But GMRS handhelds are fine. Look it up. I did. "These channels can be license-free, ..." No. If you are operating a handheld GMRS radio on any GMRS channel, any of the 22, including 8-14, you are supposed to be licensed. If you are operating an FRS radio on those channels, you don't need a license. "So if yes unlocked the radios will transmit establishing open communications and ensuring the operator has a established license and follows FCC rules. " I can't quite make sense of what you're saying there. But an unlocked amateur radio isn't supposed to be used for GMRS. I'm talking about what is authorized, not what is possible, and not what is enforced. There's really nobody enforcing the use of a handheld ham radio that's been unlocked for GMRS, so long as it's following power limit rules, and not being used to cause a lot of trouble. But according to the rules of the FCCs, you're not supposed to use an unlocked device for GMRS. This is clear in the FCC spec. In practice, those who use any radio for GMRS, stay conformant in terms of bandwidth, power levels, frequency centers, and the stipulation that 8-14 is for handheld, not mobile, nobody really seems to actually care enough to try to enforce whether the radio was unlocked or not.1 point

OK, program your radio for the input PL of the one repeater that does need it and do NOT program a RX PL in your radio on that channel. It will hear BOTH repeaters. Both repeaters will hear it because you will be transmitting the correct PL for the one that needs it and the other one doesn't care about the PL. It's just gonna receive anything on the frequency regardless of the PL being used.1 point

Connecting to Multiple Repeaters In My Area
NEOuser1 reacted to SteveShannon for a question
The repeater that doesn't require an input tone will repeat everything it hears on its input frequency. The repeater that requires an input tone will only repeat those things that it hears which include the correct tone. So, if you transmit using the input tone for the repeater that requires tones, and if you are within range of both, both repeaters will retransmit your transmission.1 point -
Superheterodyne vs wattage
WRZG694 reacted to OffRoaderX for a topic
Welcome to the forum! But watch out for "some people" that will try to grossly over-complicate things when answering even the most simple of questions in sad attempts to show you how smart they think they are. Superhet receivers are generally "better" than cheap SOC type radios - but most people would not notice any difference.. I would worry more about features/what the radio can do more than the receiver type, but thats just me. On wattage, unless you are looking at a huge difference like 25W vs 5W, you aren't going to see much difference in range - for example, the only thing you would notice on an 8W radio vs a 5W radio, is that the battery will go dead faster on the 8W. For the antenna, almost anything will work better than the rubber ducky on your 5Gs. You didnt say if you wanted to upgrade to another HT or a base/mobile type radio - if you post what you're considering we can give some feedback on the exact model.1 point
