  1. There are many companies & business-radio resellers that will do all the paperwork and footwork for you, for a modest fee. Last month I got my LMR/Business license and 7 frequencies from a place called Kemp Wireless in Eugene Oregon - everything included was less than $400 if i recall correctly. Basically they asked me a bunch of questions over the phone, I gave them my FRN info (YOU have to create an FRN/account on the FCC website) and 15 days later I had my LMR/Business License and my frequencies .
  2. "uplink" = TRANSMIT any "D" tone = DCS/DTC/DPL So just select DCS/DTC tone D423 from the Transmit Tone menu whilst on the correct repeater channel, save it, and you're done. Should take no more than 15 seconds start to finish. PRO TIP! -- The numbers of CTCSS and DCS tones do not overlap, so if you ever aren't sure, just scroll through both menu options until you see the number you are looking for - it will only be in EITHER DTC or CTC, never both.
  3. As @Sshannon eluded to, only you can answer that question.
  4. Nobody can answer that with any accuracy more than "maybe".. The only way to know is to try it. If you can't reach them, then next step before base setups would be by connecting both radios to mobile-antennas on a cookie-sheet and put them in a high-up window.. This will greatly extend the fars.
  5. They need the tones to key up the repeater but they do not need to key up the repeater to jam it.
  6. Clearly you are too young to have lived through the Franchise-Wars of the 1990's ...
  7. They seem to work pretty much the same.
  8. I dont know that there is a "right" or "wrong" answer, but if storing anything for a long period (more than several months), I would, and always do, remove the batteries.. ..and, upon reflection, i think that is actually the "right" answer..
  9. Haven't dealt with that website lately, have ya?!
  10. What frequency is the duplexer tuned for? What frequency is the repeater using? do those frequencies match?
  11. Yes for many people No for many people. The moral of the story is: Buy what best suits your wants, needs, and desires in a radio, and don't worry about what other people prefer.
  12. HOW DARE YOU SIR!! Any lack of enforcement is not the fault of the FCCs!! It is obviously the fault of some guy on Youtube daring to point out the fact that the FCCs don't care/does nothing to enforce the H.A.M., CB, or GMRS rules!!!1
  13. I have a $18 WiFi electric switch connected to my repeater so I can shut it down from my phone from anywhere (with internet connection).
  14. Probably watched someone on Youtube remove one..Thusly voiding the warranty.
  15. It is nearly impossible to get an accurate SWR reading on a HT antenna without specialized equipment... But even if your reading of 2 was accurate, an SWR of 2 is perfectly fine. Stop overthinking everything and just use your radio.
  16. Jeezus... WHY in TF would you want to do that?
  17. Its just people talking.. Many in Spanish.. its not "a complete zoo", its just busy.
  18. Yes, you are over thinking it... Unless your goal is to bounce your signal off the moon or "make contacts" with anonymous men around the world - in either case, you should not be using GMRS for that and would be happier with H.A.M. or the Grindr app. It is true that if you CORRECTLY attach a wire from the antenna to the chassis it will be grounded better, you will never notice any difference. OTOH, if you do it wrong and short it out, you WILL notice when it doesnt work at all. Stop paying attention to the radiotards that have no life, install the radio, and enjoy it.
  19. Well.. No.. Because "tone" and "Privacy Tone" would include CTC, CTCSS, and PL, which are not the same. and we don't want to go down that rabbit hole.
  20. and dont forget about DTC.. DTC, DPL, DCS = all the same
  21. Thankfully for normal people using a GMRS radio, "close" is plenty good enough.
  22. I have tested several against my RigExpert AA-650 and they always come in within ~1%-5% .. Weird.
