  1. PS: it does not HAVE TO BE the internet. You could also use your own private leased-line type connection, but that is much costly.
  2. The only way to do this and not break any of the GMRS rules would be to link them over the internet. Not sure of the overall cost, but not a trivial task. I'm sure others can chime in with more details.
  3. Cheap, low quality cable - too many of the RF electricities fall out and dont make it to the antenna.
  4. I am not aware of any repeaters that do this, but the functionality may exist (others can chime in) but even if using a Unit-ID (ANI/DTMF), anyone could very easy spoof it and use the repeater.. There is no way that I am aware of on GMRS, without breaking the GMRS rules, to fully prevent people from using a GMRS repeater.
  5. Hopefully @rdunajewski can fix it.
  6. Not a mobile, its an HT, but the Wouxun's KG-Q10G is a GMRS radio that also receives CB.. So far, as of today the only one on the market.
  7. Violate any protocol? NO Upset the repeater owners? Maybe, but that does not matter.. Just don't intentionally be a dickhead.
  8. are they/you guys in a noisy area? Where we go there is usually zero radio traffic other than the few other off-roaders nearby.
  9. I do a bit of off-roading and I dont know of any other off-readers that run any tones, unless/except when in some kind of large event. Many that I know, myself included not only do not run any tones, but also scan all frequencies in case someone is calling for help.
  10. Dont mess with it - 2.02:1 is plenty good enough.
  11. It sounds like its tuned just fine, and I wouldn't mess with it .. But how you actually tune it depends on what kind of antenna it is.
  12. Stating the fact that there are not droves of GMRS users across the country staring at their radios every-night waiting to chit-chat with strangers is not dissuading anyone from doing anything. Its simply stating a fact. If this makes you sad, I have just the cure to ease your pain and itching.
  13. Yes, but I am using Windows 11 on ARM, so it might not be the same.
  14. Oh, this should be fun...
  15. It means he was paid to say that... You gotta watch those video guys.. They're all just shills hawking that cheap chinese junk and they will say anything the company instructs them to say. I know this because "some people" proclaim this, so it must always be true in every instance.. But seriously, any time someone is paid to review a product, you do have to take it with a bag of salt unless that person has shown their trustworthiness by doing things like calling-out junk when they see it, even if it makes the manufacturer sad.
  16. GMRS is not really intended to find anonymous men to chat with for "action". For that kind of "action" you might want to look into H.A.M. radio or the Grindr app for your phone. GMRS is primarily intended for things like communicating with your group while off-roading, hiking, caravanning, etc. so in many/most places it is very quiet.
  17. I've been over-thinking this all afternoon and I just realized you could just say it 'Niner One One'
  18. This is why I always recommend buying from Amazon instead of direct from the manufacturer website, even if it costs 6 more dollars, because of how easy Amazon makes it to do returns.. Not so much when you buy direct.
  19. Yes.
  20. Wow! OVER 20 years!? I am very impressed!
  21. Send it back and tell them to send you one that isnt defective or give you back your money.
  22. According to the CDC, since 2012, about 400 people have been struck by lightning. According to the FCC, since 2012, less than 10 people have gotten into trouble for transmitting on GMRS at over 50watts, not using a callsign, etc. To me, it would seem that @WRXB215 MIGHT be exaggerating or fear mongering..
  23. You can't.
  24. Contrary to the lies that "some people" will try and tell you it would be unheard of for the FCC to fine you or confiscate anything. At worst you would get a letter asking you to stop breaking any rules.(source: FCC public enforcement database). That said, it is always a good idea to follow the rules. There is no FCC rule prohibiting connection your repeater to Zello (MY repeater is connected to Zello) (Source, FCC Part 95).. You just have to ensure that everyone using your repeater is licensed, uses their callsign, etc. There is a rule regarding not connecting your radio to the "public switched telephone network", which "some people" misinterpret to mean "the internet", but this is not my (or most people's) interpretation. When in doubt, do not listen to what I, or anyone else on the internet says, read the rules for yourself.
