  1. Thanks
H8SPVMT got a reaction from sycboi in Midland MXT275 keeps receiving static bursts…
If this happens on all channel setting I would suspect what ever makes the the "squelch setting level" is bad in the unit.  Try changing the squelch setting and see how the unit reacts.  With that information call Midland and ask to sent the unit back for a checkout.
I am a newbie and just throwing this out there.  I too get pops of static in certain locations but it seems to be transmissions/burst of telecommunications stuff in different locations but unlike your situation it only happens in different areas.

Correct - A (simplex) channel to talk to other travelers/get road checks/etc, while on the road - just like good old CB Ch19.
Discussing it here doesn't matter though, because none of the discussion, arguing, and bragging about who has "worked in the industry" longest is going to make any difference at all.

In our area of texas 99.9% of people causing problems are construction crews, crain operating crews etc, we have found if we go over to the simplex channel they are illegally operating on and ask if their supervisor is availble, then explain the 2017 rule changes etc, they have moved off to an frs channel where they dont need a license , and we dont hear them on the repeaters anymore. So far all have been good folks

Good, that is a great idea , since we suggested ch19 for On Road travel!

I lost my license while talking an unlicensed user,  Seriously.... I have no idea where I put it.  I ended up having to print another copy.

Ah.... I'm just joking.  I didn't lose my license, but i did get a strongly worded scolding from the club president.  He said "Don't feed the monkeys."

Why do you think you have them programed correctly?
Have you actually made contact with the repeaters and if so, what is your indication(s) that you have opened the repeater?
Did you contact the repeater operator thru a conversation on the repeater, email or text messages?
How do you know for certain the repeaters are online and operating?
I'm not banging you here, I wheel a lot too by myself and even did the Trans American Trail by myself.    An Inreach or Spot with some helicopter/medivac insurance would be a good investment.

Sorry to sound negative but if your doing solo wheeling and out of cellular range there is no way you should rely on the GMRS repeaters unless you know and use them often. Buy a spot or an Inreach to be safe. GMRS is not for hailing emergencies for the most part. While I know of places than monitor certain channels I'd be careful thinking thats your safety net.

Isn't that a good reason to use CTCSS or digital tone squelch? Particularly the digital tone squelch since there are a lot of them to choose from so the likely hood of one being used by another group isn't that high.
As far as channel congestion goes. Well, you only have 22 simplex channels to pick from, you're sort of stuck with the problem. Your other choice is all get your Ham Technician Class license then you have a whole lot more spectrum to use.

With general folks out running the roads around town a dedicated channel can work loosely as a club (per say) to shout out to other members.  But when we put a couple hundred Jeeps out in the woods on trails, each have to have their own channels.  And then there just isn't enough channels for a congested location for 40-75 square miles.
A draw back here is when you start hearing a call for assistance on another trail using the same channel, but miles away and mistaken it for someone on your trail ....

As an avid off roader and someone who travels a lot to do it, I am not even 100% convinced of this.  LOL
I mentioned before that I know that there are groups, clubs, circuit series, etc., that have adopted a specific frequency/channel for their respective activities, but many of the groups I wheel with around the country just pick some random frequency/channel that everyone seems to agree on.
Even professionally guided trail rides I have been on, the trail guides tend to use random channels between 8 and 14.  The one time someone I was wheeling with didn't have a radio capable of being on channel 8, the trail guide told everyone to got to channel 7.
So, it seems all over the place.

(insert anecdotal experience disclaimer here) The little traffic I do hear while traveling is little kids playing on channels 1 though 4 or the occasional retail store near the highway on 1 through 7.  Hardly someone to "chat" with while I put miles behind me.
In a real emergency I'll use a cell phone, 2m/70cm or HF radio.  However, if every single one of them are broken or somehow not functioning for me, I'll call on channels 1 through 7 for help, because a little kid can get a parent to help me or a store clerk can call 911 in an emergency.  Everything else seem like a ghost town.

Some repeaters are set to have no squelch tail; so "kerchunking" them will result in silence.  The only way to confirm these would be with a 2nd radio in range and set to transmit to this repeater with the proper tone.

FCC calls them channels, so I do, too.
§ 95.1763 GMRS channels., (c): "467 MHz main channels. Only mobile, hand-held portable, control and fixed stations may transmit on these 8 channels."... "The channel center frequencies are: 467.5500, 467.5750, 467.6000, 467.6250, 467.6500, 467.6750, 467.7000, and 467.7250 MHz. "

As a software developer, many hire me as the "expert". But, I always run into this very scenario where the guy at the top knows better. It's like hiring a lawyer, then questioning the entire process and ending up in jail. In our case, it's not jail, just other people's money wasted.
