  1. Hi all, I just purchased a Nagoya NA-701G to play with for my Baofeng UV-9G. I wanted a shorter antenna than the dual-band stock antenna that was specific for GMRS. I have found that the local police frequencies I was listening to (~131 MHz) are not received as well as using the stock antenna. Would this be because the Nagoya is tuned for GMRS, and is much less sensitive versus the dual-band stock antenna when used outside the GMRS frequencies? Seems like the obvious answer, but not sure. Thank you.
  2. Would this in turn create a MURS repeater? § 95.2733 Prohibited MURS uses. MURS stations must not be operated as repeater stations or signal boosters. This prohibition includes store-and-forward packet operation.
  3. I just installed one of these, and it sounds great. I replaced a Nagoya UT-72G, and the Midland Ghost provides greater clarity.
  4. I prefer being referred to as a Well-Marbled American, if you don't mind, sir.
  5. These are great little radios. I've used them in the wild and they work well. I have six of them, I guess just to have six of them lol
  6. There's a couple repeaters local to me on this site, and in the description they say "open repeater, no request necessary, emails will be ignored" or something like that.
  7. I have the BF-H5 which is essentially the same radio, and the H5 transmits HAM, MURS and GMRS.
  8. Maybe he uses the GMRS Pro to prop up his HAM HT so it doesn't tip over?
  9. Saw this in an article just now: "The SKA-Mid array in Karoo (will) scan the sky for sources of radio waves in the middle frequency range from 350 MHz to 15.4 GHz using 197 dishes, each 50 feet (15 meters) in diameter." How soon do you think it will be before Midland starts advertising FRS radios capable of reaching Africa? ?
  10. a/k/a Retevis RA25. But I believe the DB20-G and AT-779UV are easier to program via computer, from what I read in other forums on this site.
  11. Thus explaining Randy's recon of the Salton Sea... I guess he is looking to solve the Sad Ham problem once and for all...
  12. Agreed, but when I joined I didn't know what to search until after I read a bunch
  13. Way to kill the dream. I hear the ladies love his belt clips.
  14. Pretty sure the license only takes a day or two after paying the fee. If you just want to listen, maybe start with a $22 UV-5R, until you have a handle on your needs a bit better.
  15. I was in Las Vegas a few weeks ago and listened in to a GMRS net for a bit, and it was the most boring thing ever. First, there was 15 minutes of "check ins" followed by a few more minutes of "did I miss anybody?" Never again lol
  16. I've purchased from mygmrs, Amazon, eBay, and BTech. No problems so far.
  17. Although we ID as required, my wife is "Fortune Cookie" because she is of (mostly) Asian heritage, and I am "Stink Bug" because I don't smell so good...
  18. I could see a pretty cool use case in which a Retevis RT97 repeater is used for a campsite (or a church), and a bunch of little BF-T11 satellites for the users
  19. I got my orange BF-H5 for $33, but is was only the radio and charger. I do think the sound quality is good. In fact, I may order another. Any idea what the power on GMRS frequencies may help? I doubt it is ten watts, but maybe six or seven?
  20. I bought my first pair on Amazon, and then two more pairs on eBay ??. I do like these radios.
  21. Based on these helpful answers, it seems that I should be transmitting from my radio on 467.575 with tone of 200DPL (encode), then receiving on my radio on 462.575 with a tone of 100DPL (decode)? Thanks all, this is good info.
  22. Hi all, I am trying to setup my Retevis RA25 to add a hypothetical repeater with tones via the Retevis software (as a learning exercise). In my scenario, my fake repeater has this info: Name: TEST575, Frequency In: 462.575, Frequency Out: 467.575 (standard offset), Input Tone: 200DPL, Output Tone: 100DPL My confusion is twofold: Is the Input Tone the CTCSS/DCS Encode, and the Output Tone is the CTCSS/DCS Decode? For a tone of 200DPL, do I use D200I or D200N? I included a screenshot of two different settings, not sure which would work. Thanks all.
