That radio is not settling, it is an awesome choice. I use it for GMRS, and I also have the excellent Wouxun KG-UV9D Mate for HAM stuff (which will transmit on GMRS if modified, but that is only for emergencies).
Maybe a silly idea, but if MURS was legally 10 watts instead of 2 watts, I would be happy to use it outdoors. But the 2 watts doesn't really do it for me, unless I am only a few houses away.
The standard UV-5R will also t/r 1.25 meters if you set it up right. Not sure about the GMRS version. (Of course, you would need the correct antenna...)
I passed my Technician exam while visiting Wyoming, and the VEs were delightful. Then I passed my General exam in my town in California, and these dudes were severely uptight. Must be a reflection on the locale haha
You take the technician exam first. If you pass, they offer the general exam right then and there. If you pass that, they offer the amateur extra exam right then and there. In theory, you could pass the whole thing in one sitting.
A novel idea, but that would be the equivalent of having all GMRS repeaters use no tone, which would reduce the available repeater combinations to eight per locale. In crowded areas this would be impractical.
(Myth) HAMs rag chewing about their medical conditions, daily prescriptions and doctor visits is quite valuable information and does wonders for advancing the hobby.
Another option for home is to buy an awesome handheld and connect that to your home antenna. Not as much power as a base, but if the antenna is decent and has some height you might not notice the difference. And you can do the same setup in the car.
