Well I found out that the UV-5R GMRS will indeed transmit on 2m VHF frequencies IF and only IF you save them to the radio and are in channel mode.
The standard UV-5R will also t/r 1.25 meters if you set it up right. Not sure about the GMRS version. (Of course, you would need the correct antenna...)

Fortunately we’re not all like that. When I took my tests the VEs were very welcoming.
I passed my Technician exam while visiting Wyoming, and the VEs were delightful. Then I passed my General exam in my town in California, and these dudes were severely uptight. Must be a reflection on the locale haha

Question (which may have been addressed in the previous pages, but I'm too lazy to check): Must one take the tech exam first? What if one wants to go straight to the general? Is that a no-can-do, or a sure-why-not?
Okay, three questions total.
You take the technician exam first. If you pass, they offer the general exam right then and there. If you pass that, they offer the amateur extra exam right then and there. In theory, you could pass the whole thing in one sitting.

Welcome.
Simple, watch videos and read the radio manual.

Seriously? Seems a bit overpriced.

At this point, I have two GMRS UV-9G HT that I am very happy with them in general, but for the price, they seem to be an exceptional value. I also have two ham UV-5Rs HT's that I am sending back to put the money toward something I like better.
Bummer you didn't just start with two Baofeng GT-3WP HT, opened up for GMRS

I wish the FCC required GMRS repeaters to all use a standard tone.
A novel idea, but that would be the equivalent of having all GMRS repeaters use no tone, which would reduce the available repeater combinations to eight per locale. In crowded areas this would be impractical.

If you have ever been told lies or heard myths about radios that you would like to see tested, please post it in this thread.
(Myth) HAMs rag chewing about their medical conditions, daily prescriptions and doctor visits is quite valuable information and does wonders for advancing the hobby.

Another option for home is to buy an awesome handheld and connect that to your home antenna. Not as much power as a base, but if the antenna is decent and has some height you might not notice the difference. And you can do the same setup in the car.
-
You may also want to download the manual of a Wouxun or some other handheld, the procedures/steps in there may be somewhat similar.
