WRUI365 got a reaction from marcspaz in Amature bands VS. GMRS Range
Here is a example of LOS communications that say Kenwood dual band ht have done with a Arrow dual band beam antenna and the HT only pushing 5 watts. ISS ring a bell to anyone, voice and packet. There is some advantages with amatuer that gmrs don't have.

WRUI365 got a reaction from GreggInFL in If I program 2 radios identically to hit a repeater, why can't they talk to each other?
iIf you have one radio in your left hand hitting the transmit button, and you have 2nd radio in your right hand hoping to here the transmission from your left hand and you don't. The radios are to close and you experienced something called de-sense. The radios are to close to one another. As the song goes "you have to keep them seperated"

WRUI365 reacted to marcspaz in NOVA GMRS Expedition to Reddish Knob - March 29, 10 AM
Details
Event by Marc Spaziano and NOVA GMRS Reddish Knob, Saturday, March 29, starting at 10 AM. Public · Anyone Come join NOVA GMRS for a Radio Expedition up to Reddish Knob and play Radio for the afternoon! Everyone is welcome to bring their handheld radios, mobile radios, or "portable" setups and discover the amazing range of your gear that is associated with high elevation of the mountain top. Lets find out how far Your radio can reach! Reddish Knob is located in the George Washington National Forest, outside of Dayton / Harrisonburg, Virginia. While this is a knob on the ridge-line in the forest, it is paved all the way to the top. Any vehicle can comfortably make it all the way to the top without an issue. Along with your radios, bring a camera, warm clothes, and something to snack on for lunch. There is nothing nearby... so bring everything you need to be comfortable for a few hours. For those not familiar with the area, we can find a meet-up spot if you would like to follow me from town, up to the main lot. -

WRUI365 got a reaction from BoxCar in At what signal level would you expect near full quieting to occur?
And remember this one important thing. Not all radios are the same. Some like my Moto R7 will try to enhance the received signal with processing to make it clearer if need be. It all depends on the equipment you using at the time.

WRUI365 got a reaction from gortex2 in APRS software for GMRS
Actually, APRS is more then just throwing out a position report for which the BTech Pro is doing for which only other BTech Pro users can see. Though APRS is used primarily in VHF at 144.390mhz US at 1200 baud, can be used at 9600 baud UHF, and 300 Baud HF. Position reporting, weather, telemetry, messaging, and other uses like IGATE, Digipeaters relaying others beacons and messages over airwaves and thru the internet back to airwaves world wide. So people might be getting confused about the terms and what can be done with it. APRS in Amateur radio is just another form of packet radio that is used in the spectrum area of VHF that can be used for AX.25 packet protocol. Position reporting is one thing, heck my Harris XG100P can give and receive position reports from other Harris users on P25 protocol which is called SA"situation awareness" just by keying up mic button. That is just postion reporting, not APRS. So people have to realize that there are huge differences with certain gear and should not confuse the terms.

WRUI365 got a reaction from SteveShannon in Alternate Power
Also most if not all Alternators on current vehicles, there voltage output is controlled by the pcm, not by how fast the rpm is going. If you hook up a diagnostic tool and look at the voltage a alternator is putting out. You would think something is wrong.

Today, I lost a friend; NOVA GMRS lost a beloved member.
Roland Jackson (WRPJ758) died today. For those in the DC Metro area, he had a positive impact on the community. Roland was a staple in the GMRS realm, willing to help anyone, chat with everyone.
You will be missed my friend.

WRUI365 got a reaction from WSBA587 in Will Yaesu 6000r with ATAS120 tune gmrs?
The radio in question doesn't have the circuitry in it to drive the ATAS120 motor to tune it, so the answer is a big no.

WRUI365 got a reaction from AdmiralCochrane in An interesting proposal for GMRS+
The 70CM band for Amateur radio covers 420mhz to 450mhz. Some other countries have different blocks, but in the US we have 30mhz of use. People getting devices that are from other countries and using them here in that frequency block are in for a big disappointment because those devices aren't actually legal to use. They complain to the FCC about interference issues and find out the hard way.

WRUI365 got a reaction from CyborgAlienWRYG738 in Stun and Kill Function
I wonder if you people know that stun and kill function is by digital means, not analog. As in if you are using a DMR, NXDN or P25 unit and someone wants you not on that talk group. There is no analog means of doing that for the reason that in the digital modes your radio is transmitting a unit id number. In analog it doesn't.

WRUI365 reacted to marcspaz in Intro to GMRS - Video
Hey folks, a few months back, I discussed providing a presentation on the introduction to GMRS, to just cover the basics. We held the presentation a couple of weeks ago and I wanted to share the video with everyone.
Fair warning, I'm not a pro YouTuber and my collar mic dropped with a few minutes left... please be gentle. LoL
This is geared towards people with little to no experience. Hopefully it helps some people.
The PowerPoint presentation is available for download, here...

WRUI365 reacted to marcspaz in Thank You from Mike (Bull Run Fundraiser)
Hey everyone. Mike asked me to pass on a very big THANK YOU to everyone for donating to the power bill.
Donations reached just over $1,000. This was enough to cover expenses associated with getting the power turned back on, a few months of current and future power bills, and Mike is investing the remainder of the funds in a backup power system to keep the Bull Run repeater on the air during comercial power outages.
We have an amazing group! You all are the best!

WRUI365 reacted to marcspaz in September 16 - Radio Expedition to Reddish Knob
CONVOY Hey folks, I am setting up a meet-up time and place for those wanting to convoy up to the mountain together. The hope is to get to the mountain top by about 9:00-9:30 AM. For those leaving from the DC Metro area, we can meet at Sheetz at 13039 Balls Ford Rd, Manassas, VA. at 6:30 AM and we will leave promptly at 7:00 AM. For those coming from the Winchester area, lets meet at Burger King at 33964 Old Valley Pike, Strasburg, VA. at 8:00 AM and leave promptly at 8:15. We will stop for fuel at the Shell gas station at 3275 S Main St, Harrisonburg, VA., and then head up to Reddish Knob. COMFORT / FOOD Hey folks, this is going to be 5 hours of round-trip driving for me, so I will be making a day of it. I assume this will be the case for many of you. I wanted to just provide a few recommendations and reminders to make sure everyone has fun and is comfortable. Please remember to bring your radio! LOL. It's not a requirement, as I am willing to share, but if you want to maximize your time, having your own gear will help. Bring a chair of some type, and possibly a small folding table. This will make life better. I wouldn't want to stand all day and having a flat surface for writing notes about contact, a place to hold your radio/drink/make lunch will be a plus. The weather looks like its going to be wonderful, but cold in the morning. Dress in layers, bring a hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, etc. If you take daily meds for health, please remember to bring them. Food and Drinks... I would recommend a small cooler with drinks and some food that doesn't require heating. The mountain top isn't really setup for cooking. There are no fire pits or grills. Let me know if you have any questions. If you have any other tips... post them up.
