marcspaz Posted October 26, 2023 Report Posted October 26, 2023 There has been a lot of ducting lately. This morning I was able the hear a couple guys on a repeater 130 statute miles from me, in Claymont Delaware to Woodbridge Virginia. Not the longest I've had, but it's been every day for a couple weeks. How's tropo working for you? Anyone else taking advantage? Quote

I live about 5 miles away from Claymont, DE.... just wondering which repeater it is. Quote
tweiss3 Posted October 26, 2023 Report Posted October 26, 2023 There has been a ton. This week we had a station come in full quieting at just about 140-150 miles on 2 meters. I've also noticed receiving strong signals from adjacent coordinated repeaters (shared frequencies). This temperature swing has been something. WRYZ926 and marcspaz 2 Quote
WRYZ926 Posted October 26, 2023 Report Posted October 26, 2023 The weather is definitely having something to do with it. I haven't noticed too much on 2m or GMRS but the guys on 10m are going crazy right now. marcspaz 1 Quote

It was on the 650 pair with a tone of 91.5. 3 hours ago, WRYZ926 said: The weather is definitely having something to do with it. Guys have been getting Argentina really well here in the midwest. marcspaz 1 Quote
marcspaz Posted October 26, 2023 Author Report Posted October 26, 2023 @WRYZ926 yeah, I usually work central and south America extremely well, but I seem to be able to work Australia, New Zealand and South Africa better than Asia. I work western Europe like I'm making a phone call. I only need 5w in the mobile or in the house. Quote
WRYZ926 Posted October 26, 2023 Report Posted October 26, 2023 I need to get the old 10m radio and antenna setup so I can at least use 28.3 to 28.5 while studying for my general. marcspaz 1 Quote
WRYS709 Posted October 26, 2023 Report Posted October 26, 2023 Are you all discussion GMRS, or Ham bands (yes, I realize that 10 meters is Ham). What times of day? Quote

Definitely GMRS... I have been hearing stations/repeaters from PA, DE, even NC, all in Northern Virginia. That said, 10m has been fire this week, too. Quote

marcspaz Posted October 27, 2023 Author Report Posted October 27, 2023 The ducting is happening in the morning and in the evening as temperatures swing greatly in a short period of time. 10m is on fire basically from around 9am to around 6pm AdmiralCochrane and WRXB215 2 Quote

Typically, the higher you go into the atmosphere, the colder it gets. However, a rapid influx of high pressure can cause a temperature inversion. This pushes a layer of warmer air up into the troposphere. These rapid transitions will typically occur in Spring and Fall when there are very rapid temperature changes during sun rise and sunset. While it occurs in the Spring, it's most prevalent in Fall. SpeedSpeak2Me, WRXB215, SteveShannon and 2 others 5 Quote

AdmiralCochrane Posted December 29, 2023 Report Posted December 29, 2023 On 2m I have heard ducting all times of the year when the approaching weather front was STRONG, from maybe 14 hours before the storm until an hour before. marcspaz and WRUU653 2 Quote
