  1. No.. Although many hams do slum on GMRS in many areas, the main use for GMRS is utilitarian communication - ie; when off-roading and in a group, hiking, traveling with multiple vehicles, etc. Sadly, it sounds like in your area many of the rag-chewers have taken over.. But once you get out of reach of their basements, like out adventuring in the desert or mountains, all their noise goes away. I run a repeater, partially run another repeater which is one of the largest/most used in Southern California, and run a group - not only am i not a ham, most in the group are not hams either.

  2. @kidphc that's good to know that you had luck with moving your mount. I haven't moved mine yet, but when I get back to Virginia, if the dealer is done with some unrelated work, I'll pick it up and try sliding it forward. Worse case, I can swap the front and rear functions, using the back for UHF and the front antenna for VHF. And yes, both Jeep and Dodger/Ram vehicles cause a massive amount of RFI with most of the computers and controllers being in plastic cases instead of metal. I also can't run an HF Amp in my Jeep because anything over 100w below 50 MHz causes absolute chaos. LoL

  3. Not only is the license easier to get, but that one license covers your entire extended family. No other licensed service has such licensing.

  4. It is definitely not just FRS radios. Every GMRS radio I have owned or used from Midland, has the call feature and a bunch of call tones. That includes the new MXT500 and MXT575. Come to think of it, every Motorola GMRS handle I have ever own had a call feature too.

    SHOP FAIL!!

This is unfortunate, I ordered a radio and a cable in two separate transactions, and they both arrived relatively quickly. Is this site showing the item as sold out now?

  6. Hang on, hang on, hang on, HANG ON! It is very clear to anybody who is watching that I, me, I, aka not someone else, is his favorite viewer. I think we need someone to adjudicate this ruling, and as i'm the one who bought up that adjudication is required, I will be appointing myself to the role. Phew, glad we got that sorted Adam p.s - the official travel channel for GMRS in CH 19, no tone. #neverforget

  7. I'm not that good with the math. I cheated and got the information on the Internet from several different sources.

  9. Marc, I had my Comet 2x4sr mounted on a ditch light bracket (used hood hinge screws as mounting location) right off the corner of the hood on my Landcruiser. I was having issues with RFI on half of the GMRS frequencies. Wrote a thread on it. Also was getting wiper motor noise etc. Well recently i moved it half way down the hood on a different mount about 2 feet further. Mostly because the ditch light mount was rocking. New mount the antenna is too damn stiff and rocks the mount as well. Not as bad since its secure to the fender and not the hood. Side benefit seems to be (still testing). That there is a metric crap ton LESS RFI. Even though its now next to the fuse box and battery. From what I figure on my truck 90% of the noise was being generated from the Vacuum accumulator motor (not a stereo typical booster setup). Super long winded. Sorry. Chrysler products are not known to have the best ecus nor wiring. Have you tried moving the antenna further down the hood (towards the bumper). Although hearing wiper motor noise from another vehicle is a bit much. Was this an issue with your old 400?

  10. GMRS is aimed for the non technical user. The idea is to just pickup the radio, pick a channel and press the button to talk. That's why the limited selection of channels and limited features available verses Ham radio that uses a "band" where one selects a frequency to use, different operating modes etc. The GMRS service is structured to facilitate communications between family members and to conduct family business. The idea wasn't for making random contacts or experimenting with equipment, however some do this. Yes you'll find a significant number of Hams using GMRS too. Not necessarily a bad thing. One just has to keep in mind the differences between the services. What would be an acceptable topic on the Ham band maybe of little to no interest to a GMRS user.

  11. Will do, thank you. Working through initial setup teething. got ahold of CPS 16 and it straight refuses to load on the laptop. Tried it on another computer and it loads, but it isn't recognizing the radio. Going to grab the 6550 from the post office tomorrow, and see if that will play nicer.

  13. Nooo, no no. It's not worth all that. I can learn to accept that I'm his second favorite viewer. I just think that it's only fair for me to expect him to address me as such, though. Congrats, you're his favorite. ?

    Don't be an idiot

He transmitted five times on the frequency they used to direct aircraft the first day, “thwarting” their ability to effectively respond (according the the public statement). He transmitted three times on the second day. At some point during the second day a supervisor dropped what he/she was doing to tell him to knock it off, in spite of the characterization of the fire incident being described as an “all hands on deck” event. I could understand someone making an emergency transmission on an unauthorized band once, but eight times? The guy was trying to make himself more important than he is.

  16. Wait, what? That's just not possible. He very clearly pointed at ME in his last video and told me I was his favorite, and he didn't want to waste MY time. We need to get to the bottom of this.....

    GMRS travel channel

Based on my subjective and nerdy calculations, there are a little over 10,000 licensed GMRS users that are affected by this, which works out to about 7% of the United States licensed GMRS users. I say we (the 93%) use channel 19 anyway hahaha

  19. The big question is, where does the BTech GMRS-V2 fall into the mix? I checked your YT channel and noticed that you haven't reviewed that one yet. Is that on your schedule at some point? Love your vids by the way. It feels good to know that I'm your favorite viewer.

    GMRS travel channel

Well, I hope my post may help clear things up. I doubt it, but hopefully. I know I stir the pot with some of my posts about this, but reality is, this is my current and typical daily situation while I'm driving around... I'm probably still go a stir the pot when this topic pops up though. LOL

    GMRS travel channel

Correct - A (simplex) channel to talk to other travelers/get road checks/etc, while on the road - just like good old CB Ch19. Discussing it here doesn't matter though, because none of the discussion, arguing, and bragging about who has "worked in the industry" longest is going to make any difference at all.

  24. @PACNWComms This is going in my Jeep for offroad use, replacing my MXT400. If I have any issues like that, I will let you know. I use my GMRS radio almost every day. I still have my MXT400 and the original mic. The radio and mic/cable are in fantastic shape. Anecdotally, every single CB, Ham or GMRS radio I have seen with a messed up mic cable, the installer put the radio too far away, leading to the user over-stretching the cables. Also, the user and installer were typically the same person. LOL
