It is sad. And I don't know why I feel so bad for him. He's obviously doing it to himself. But I don't think people a genuinely born this way. Unless he has extreme Asperger's and just rejects whatever doesn't make sense to him. Something tells me he's been hurt bad. It drives me nuts to see people obviously trying to be social but failing at it. Maybe I'm the one not right in the head for hoping that there is more to SoCal than what is displayed here. Dude, if you read this, know that I don't hate you. I don't know you well enough to hate you. But since we're all on this spinning rock, so they say, together... how about you tell us about what you DO like. What radios do you use? Why do you choose them. Not everyone is out to get you. At least I'm not.

  6. A gain of 11.9 db is more than twice the gain of 8.5 db when measured in the direction of the gain. So even though 10 less watts enters the antenna, in the direction of the gain twice as much RF power is focused. However, if you need an antenna that is less focused, more wide in its propagation pattern, a lower gain antenna might help. I’m curious what kind of coax you used when you measured the two different antennas. Honestly I would try both antennas to see which one works better. The calculations give an indication but real world usage is better.

I love my Apache case. I use it for all my YouTube camera gear. It's been down river in a heavy thunderstorm, soaked to the bone. Not a drop inside.

    Repeaters

To accomplish this with out the internet the second repeater would have to be on different frequencies then the normal “pairs”. Not gonna happen under gmrs rules. However this can be done with ham. How far are you trying to get? Most of the repeaters in my area are getting 100-200 mile radius. That means 2 radios can be up to 400miles apart and talk no problem. I’d concentrate on getting 50 watts to the coax, (many/most duplexers take 1/2 the wattage before the coax) and a good antenna up high before spending money on a whole new repeater set up.

No, we don’t say you’re lying about that; we tell you you’re a jerk when you imply that anyone who doesn’t get 200 miles is incompetent and when you scold new members about not reading the rules. As you say: it’s all about line of sight.

Anything can be stolen if someone wants it. Ive have my car stolen so the thief could spend hours yanking my sound system out of it, and then dump my very messed up car in the middle of the street in front of my house just to be a dick about it. Just install it somewhere other than on top of your dashboard and don't worry about it.

    Games handheld radio

My situation changed a little today. Yesterday, I built a J pole out of 1/2 inch copper pipe. Today, I tuned it and took it outside. With good line of sight and a Radioddity GM-30, I was able to reach a repeater about 30 miles away. The people on the other end had a bit of trouble understanding me, but they were able to understand my call sign. More power should make the problem go away. We'll see what happens when my base radio finally gets delivered. -Steve WRXU861

  19. I am using 50' of LMR400 from the antenna down to the lightning protector and then a 12' RG58 from there to the radio. Monday I will be receiving a 41' and 12' LMR400 to replace those 2 cables. Both antennas seem to perform equally well (as far as I can tell). I can hit a repeater 23 miles away on medium power and reports are that it is strong and clear. I have also had the same report from a simplex contact over 24 miles away in the opposite direction. Sounds like the numbers indicate the higher gain antenna should be the winner and it performs well so will probably stick with it. Thank you for your responses - not only in this post but many other posts that I have learned quite a bit from.

    Repeaters

It can be done as a voting system which isn't cheap. The two repeaters listen to the incoming signal then the one with the better receive "score" triggers its transmitter. Yes, the repeaters are interconnected but it's for the purpose of control and not relaying messages.

I'm glad I could help. The main reason for the two-radio setup for was a situation where I might need to provide a radio for someone else. One radio isn't much good by itself. I've bought another case for a single-radio setup similar to yours, but I haven't put it together yet. BTW, if they make them for your radio, I highly recommend the silicone/rubber protective sleeve. So far, I haven't broken a radio by dropping it, but it's only a matter of time.

    Repeaters

Is it possible? Yes. Is it practical? No. It could be achieved if you have enough tower height and plenty of filtering. You would have 2 "repeaters" at each location, 1 would be the repeater, the other would be a "fixed station" and have to follow those rules. The fixed station would be a duplex RF link between the two repeater sites, but you would need to use directional antennas and significant physical vertical separation from the repeater antenna and the link antenna. Likely you would have to run the link and repeater as far apart in frequency as possible, repeater on 15 and link on 22 or the other way around. Can it be made to work? Probably. Will it be expensive? Yep. Will it be worth it? Not for the average person.

  23. Yes I run the Uniden CMX760 in both the JT and the 09JK. I have it on the bench from my old work truck just dealing with finding an antenna location on my new work truck. Its small and with 4 multibands on roof already Its been lower on the list. The new JK (18) is for the wife and being JJUSA is all GMRS probably just leave GMRS for now. Tomorrow will be it first trail ride since we got it done.

  25. Jeep stands for Just Empty Every Pocket. And that goes for old or new jeeps. We do have to get creative at times installing radios and other accessories in any new vehicle since space is at a premium. @nokones your dual battery setup looks nice. And I don't blame you for going with two batteries. I need to do the same with my Honda Pioneer 500. Winches are hard on motorcycle sized batteries, especially when plowing snow.

  26. I have tried it on a 2m/70cm ham radio with noticeable success. There was perceptible increase in reception and transmit with the tiger tail pointed in the direction of the other station and 180° away and null or reduction at 90°. No real noticeable improvement just letting it hang. This was with a Baofeng UV3 with a Nagoya tri band antenna and the larger battery. It didn't make the Baofeng as good as my Kenwood TH6A without

  27. For both the Wounxun KG-XS20G Plus and KG-935G Plus factory programming software provides the ability to password the MODE key and password the RESET "ALL" function. I didn't find any reference to this password functionality in my hardcopy manual or the latest PDF version so I played around with it see how it works. Here's what I found: Both passwords must be 6 digits. Password digits can be any number between 0-9 with a password of all zeros a special case. Entering 3 to 5 digits will cause the factory software to left justify the entered digits and pad the remainder with zeros. A password of all zeros disables the feature. All zeros is the factory default. Changing modes on the radio with "Mode Switch Password" enabled: 1) Press the MODE button 2) Enter the 6 digit password 3) Press the MENU button Do a RESET / ALL with "Reset Password" enabled: 1) Press the Menu button and using the up / down buttons select RESET function: 2) Press the Menu button again and using the up / down buttons select the reset type "ALL" 3) Press the Menu button again and enter the 6 digit password. 4) Press the MENU button. Quirks: Attempting to write a password of less than 3 digits to the radio will result in an programming software error. Saving to file a config with only 1-2 character passwords entered and then reading that file back results in the 6 digits passwords being left justified and padded with zeros.

  28. How do you know you are hitting the repeater with the "working" radio? Some repeaters will emit a "courtesy tone" (beep) back at you, and/or may trigger an auto-ID if nothing else happens for the next 10-15 minutes. Or you could ask for a radio check and see if anyone responds. Try disabling the Rx tone on the radio that isn't receiving your transmissions. If you programmed the radios with some programming software, a screenshot of how they are programmed will be quite useful to help solve your issue. Also, what exact brand and model do you have (might be on the front, might be on a label inside the battery compartment)? Remember, if both radios are set up to properly use the repeater, that channel (or however you set it up) will not work for direct HT-to-HT communication without the repeater - both radios are transmitting on one frequency and receiving on a different frequency, so they won't hear each other without the translation done by the repeater. Many radios have a mode where they can flip their Tx/Rx settings so you can talk radio-to-radio without the repeater, but let's get the basics sorted out first.

I bought a hardside case from Amazon for (IIRC) $17-18. I use it for my "grab-and-go" field trip/travel kit. It contains 2 each AR-5RM radios, spare batteries, USB charging cables, 701 antennas, 771 antennas, tri-band antennas, and belt clips. Also 1 each user's manual, dual-port 12-volt USB power unit, dual-port 110-volt USB power unit, a tiny Phillips screwdriver (to install the belt clips), programming cable, and (for the sake of completeness), a USB drive with CHIRP and the program file for the radio on it. Wherever I go, I can pull out my laptop -- or even someone else's computer -- and put in all the local repeaters. Having two radios means I can give one of them to a friend or have a backup in case one goes down. It doesn't weigh much, and it seems to provide good protection. The radios have silicone sleeves for protection. I put them face-down so the other stuff doesn't scratch up the screens and there's a thin piece of foam under them just for added protection.

On one of our trips I ended up using one of my wifes Yeti lunch coolers... figured I better get somthing designated. I ended up with this Go Pro case from amazon ($18). I use usb-c cables to charge and I can get three radios and cables or two radios and a small battery bank ($20). I got one for the Surecom, dummy, cables and adapters as well. I used some velcro strips to keep stuff where I want it. Probably something better out there but it was cheap and it works.

  38. Not unless you want to constantly be knocking your knees. The hump is occupied by a storage box and shifters. I suppose one could mount them on the floor under the seat. But the way I know water is getting too deep is when it starts coming up through the drain holes in the footwells. Now if you have a full length top and stick stuff in the be , okay.

  39. Just remember that any and all updates/support for Windows 10 will stop in October of this year. I think there is an option for continued Windows 10 support if you are willing to pay annually for it. Yes Wouxun radios do cost more than other brands but they are better quality and are generally clean as @RayDiddio mentioned. I have Baofeng UV-5R GMRS, handhelds along with Wouxun and Icom handhelds. The Wouxun is definitely better than the Baofeng radios and it is even better than the Icom IC-T10 I own.

  42. The OP stated that the damage to the previous repeater and antenna was $2000. They’re only seeking $1,000 in their gofundme. The repeater they’re seeking to purchase is currently on sale for less than $600 including a built in duplexer, which seems very reasonable. A decent antenna plus cables and associated components could very quickly consume the remainder of the targeted funding. This seems like a very reasonable request and a reasonable solution. I would urge that we not get distracted by our reactions to the town drunk.
    1 point
  43. Another thing to consider is the voltage input to the radio. Most mobile radios are rated with an input voltage of 13.8 vDC and the output RF power frequently varies with the voltage. Boost your voltage by a half volt (observing the tolerances listed in the manual) and you might see 41 watts. But a variation of one or two watts at that general power will not make a bit of difference in your ability to communicate.

A typical 5-watt (GMRS/UHF) signal can easily reach 15-50 miles in the right conditions. The moral of the story is that the topographical conditions in your area determine farz more than power. Source: I have tested ~100 GMRS/UHF radios.
