WRCY896 got a reaction from WRKX608 in You just got your GMRS license, now you want your own repeater?
I got into GMRS because I needed another layer of communication with my family. I also understood the limitations of FRS, and discovered the possibility of repeaters for GMRS. I stumbled into a working repeater, which will be programmed this week.

There are no other repeaters that get into the country I typically venture into.

I was just on a mountain top this morning, and am starting the process of the application for a solar site on that mountain with the BLM. I tested my V-1 radios to the house HT to HT and had clear communication at about 15 miles with a friend who lives 4 miles south of me.

This repeater, will give an incredible amount of coverage to where I spend about 80% of my time in the hills. Add to that, cell phones and SPOT, and I am set quite well communication wise.

One more votes for his books...that was one of my sources when I tested for tech, and I'm planning to pick up the one for general as well.

I got Gordon west's book for tech on Tuesday. I read Tuesday evening, and yesterday, and have taken several practice exams on QRZ.

I am averaging above 85 percent, where I was in the 70's yesterday morning. If I miss a question on the practice exam, I go back, re read the material and take a test again pretty simple.

Keep in mind that some of the signals you are hearing are going to be from FRS bubble pack radios. Unlikely you are going to get a response from a radio check by an unknown person, especially on local. If you can get into a repeater, more likely you will get a response.

Keep in mind, this is not ham.

From what I can see, the gm30 appears to be the same radio as the Retevis.

Upgrading to a Wouxun is not going to do you any good if there is no one on the other end to talk to.

You would have to know what the tones are.

For example, my family and I use 100.0 for the low power channel, and 462 high power and repeater channels.

This translates in my Cobra FRS radios to CTCSS number 12.

The book should have a list for the codes and how they correspond in the radio.

So if you wanted to get in my local and repeater channels, you would use channel 15, and channel 15 repeater and whatever code number the chart has for 100.00

Basically copyright differences and being forced to take a new name for a while. Same radios, different label.

GMRS is for families. No test, covers your whole family. No tinkering, grab a pre programmed radio and go.

The downside is that the FCC limits the equipment that can be used to prevent people from plugging numbers into a radio and causing interference.

There would be a lot more confusing regulations to follow if the FCC started putting all kinds of equipment exceptions for various other services, which then creates more problems than it was trying to solve for a family jist grabbing a set of radios and going.

My wife and kids are not interested in Amateur radio. This allows us all to communicate with few issues.

I just used CHIRP this afternoon to add the weather channels. It took a minute, but I finally figured it out.

I right clicked on the channel I wanted, clicked on properties, then entered the frequency that I wanted.

I talked to Rugged Radios today.

The GMRS 25 has the following specs, according to the sales person.

    IP67 rating
    RX and TX tone selective
    25khz bandwidth
Field - microphone control - programmable
They have them for sale, though have not directly marketed them yet.
    $250

The price seems steep to me, but for a person like myself who just wants to have a radio that works, and doesn't want to mess with things too much, it might be worth it.

I am considering getting one in the near future, as I don't have any radios yet and just got my license. I have been searching for a while now.

I emailed TYT about this radio.

I got a response late last night (from China) who put me in touch with the vendor for the US.

I got a response from him stating that they are in stock able to be sold, but are not being marketed yet. I did request to be put in touch with a sales rep.

    Will see how it goes.

Big questions will be in regards to be able to TX and RX on different tones as is a problem with the only other GMRS radio out there.

    Will update.
