That's awesome! You're going to have a blast.

I have to run into a meeting, so I will post some more a bit later today. The number one thing for me was to set the scan edges up per band, so I can scan and listen while driving. That way you don't have to watch the radio or manually adjust it. The best part is, while scanning, when you hit the top or bottom edge, it just loops back to the start of the frequencies again.

The Wouxun KG-uv980 is also a quadband radio that might target the same audience. I wonder how it is.

Funny you should ask...  Cricket Ventures worked with Wouxun to develop a GMRS mobile radio that now know as the KG-1000G. I worked with Danny from Cricket Ventures in 2020 to do an unbiased eval of the only prototype in existence at the time.  Man, I fell in love with that radio the moment I turned it on.

Anyway, per my communications with Danny, the electronics of the KG-1000G are indeed the KG-uv980 with different firmware.  While I have never used a radio that was marketed as the KG-uv980, with the success of the KG-1000G, I have to think the KG-uv980 is a rock star, too.

  3. It's time for me to switch things up again. Not sure what I'm switching to yet, but I pulled my XTL5000'S out of the Jeep today. I'm thinking of going back to a MXT500 or possibly an MXT575. I love the simplicity.

Also, I removed the hi-lift from the hood and removed my light bar in preparation for some new Rigid cubes that are on the way.

Of course I had to flex to showoff the clean, new look. LOL

I would steer clear of the Toyota Camry I had one and couldn't fit tires on it big enough to take it 4x4ing, and the ground-clearance was only 4 inches and it has no low-range gears. While it is cool that it supposedly can drive in dirt when you actually go 4x4ing it doesn't do well.

Man, just for giggles, I searched for lifted Camry. This thing is pretty wild. Still not a Jeep, though. Ha

When does ducting usually occur? I wanna see how far i can reach. gmrs is quiet near me. hear some chatter occasionally on a repeater but i dont have the tones for it.

Typically, the higher you go into the atmosphere, the colder it gets. However, a rapid influx of high pressure can cause a temperature inversion. This pushes a layer of warmer air up into the troposphere.  These rapid transitions will typically occur in Spring and Fall when there are very rapid temperature changes during sun rise and sunset.  While it occurs in the Spring, it's most prevalent in Fall.

I do a bit of off-roading and I dont know of any other off-readers that run any tones, unless/except when in some kind of large event.
Many that I know, myself included not only do not run any tones, but also scan all frequencies in case someone is calling for help.

Pretty much everyone I know personally... we all use the exact same methods.

  7. Hi everyone. I have had some things come up in my life that have been taking up a lot of my time. I have not had the time nor energy that NOVA GMRS deserves.

I am going to take a step back from a leadership role for awhile. I'll still be around the group to chat and will be on the air.  However, I have asked Jack Ramberg to take the lead in my absence. He's graciously agreed.

Thanks for being a wonderful group and for all the new friends. Talk to you soon.

@marcspaz, what kind of trails are you thinking? I'm sure you've got some clearance. Any space for unmodified trucks? (blue trails? green trails?)

I'm sure at some point over the weekend, at least a couple of us will run Dickey Bell and I am going to try Daniel for the first time.  For the rest of the weekend we would be wheeling trails that are 100% stock vehicle friendly.  If you have a stock mid-size or full-size pickup, high clearance SUV or a stock Wrangler, you will absolutely have a good time wheeling with us.  We'll be sure to get everyone through safely with the most amount of fun.

The only two things I can think of is, hard plastic mud flaps may get broken, and full-width side steps could get bent.  I would recommend unbolting them before going anywhere but on a gravel road.

Let us know when your going to Flagpole. Its on my list. Next weekend in VB for a family thing but then around rest of year.

We are going on December 30th, to wrap up the end of the year.  We are going to start on Peters MIll (my son wants the badge) and then heading to Flagpole via Union Springs right after we break for lunch.  If you can come, PM me.

@marcspaz I will keep you posted. Me my bud and the wives are trying to plan one for up there. They have 5 badge trails together.

Sounds good!  I only have a handful of badges.  I should work on them.

I am heading to Rausch Creek on Friday and we are going to do a trip to Flagpole Knob in the George Washington National Forest on the 30th  Trying to get a couple runs in before the snow hits.

  11. Hey folks, I figured I would start a thread since it seems like there is some interest.  So, lets see if we can get a nice weekend-long offroad trip coordinated to Troy NC, wheeling in Uwharrie National Forest.

I am tagging people I think are close and may be interested, but everyone is welcome to join.  @StogieVol @gortex2 @hfd376

I am thinking a weekend in the Spring would be good, so we can camp.  Of course, Uwharrie Cabins are an option too.  Anyplace that will accommodate everyone and give us a place to relax and hangout after a day of wheeling.

I am thinking April 20th or later would be good, since the average high temps are in the low 70's and the rainfall for the last two years was pretty minimal.  However, I am open to suggestions for other dates.

    Ideas? Comments?  Concerns?

  13. I wheel. Have been doing it for 40+ years.

    I have a 2020 Gladiator on 40" tires and a 4.5" long-arm.

The channel varies depending on who I'm wheeling with. When I'm with FRS folks, we use 7, with GMRS folks, we use 15, 19 or 22, depending on what other radio traffic is happening.

I usually wheel at Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area, Rausch Creek, The Cove, Uwharrie, and random trails in the George Washington and Thomas Jefferson national forests. Looking to hot up Gultches and Winrock in the Spring.

I really want to get a drone but all my Jeep upgrades are coming first.

Man, don't you know it.  Just had $40k in work done to my Gladiator... it hurt a little, but hot damn.  40" Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MTs and a Metalcloak 4.5" long-arm lift with all the bells and whistles... worth every penny.

My son posing with it... (he did the build)

  15. Touching on what @OffRoaderX was trying to help with (and hes on the right track) if you open the user squelch with no tone squelch or DCS squelch, so you can hear static, is the static also very quiet or is it loud?

If it is quiet when the squelch is open (monitor mode, too) then the radio's output is likely damaged in some way. Either the audio finals are fried or the speaker jack is possibly causing a partial short.

If the static is loud, then you likely have a programming issue leading to compatibility problems between wide and narrow band.
