  1. He said his 778 gets hot and it looks like you have the 779 aka DB20. By the way that looks like a really convenient spot for mounting, very nice.
  2. You said first time with this radio so my first thought is a mistake I have made before. I usually keep all my program cables plugged into the computer and I have forgotten to select the correct cable in the drop down menu.

    Help

Well you got me there. Meanwhile the poor guy that made the initial post has as all of this to wade through which I felt was unfortunate when reading this thread. For whatever reason I do. Anyway I hope OP isn’t discouraged and gives us more info so we can actually help. Cheers.

    Help

Or he registered after making the post, but that wasn’t my point. At no point did I say “help us help you” was what was rude. I was commenting on people being rude to OP for not having given more information to begin with and then saying they deserved to be ridiculed. I completely agree that asking for more information is valid and you will see I liked the post that did this.

    Help

They actually included their license in the header, so great deduction there. People aren’t required to join to ask questions. After such a warm welcome maybe they are less inclined to join. What a load of crap given for someone seeking help, why would they even come back. Gee isn’t that why Randy decided not to get a ham license. Not everyone is operating at the same level, understanding or perhaps even ability. Randy once said there is no such thing as a Sad GMRS but clearly he is wrong. We agree.
  6. I have both the UV9PX and the Q10H and I feel they are both good radios. Dispite the tri band vs quad band here are a few things I like about each. What I like about the UV9PX. if you plan to scan a lot it has faster scanning. I like that if I am monitoring two channels and I here a transmission I can look at the radio and there is an indicator that tells me if it was the upper or lower display that receaved the last transmission. It's also a bit more in wattage. What I like about the Q10H. As mentioned the display is better. I like having the upper and lower PTT (note while it didn't come set this way you can set these so the top is always the top display and the bottom is always the bottom display) it makes it easy to not transmit on the wrong frequency by mistake. It's rated IP67 so it's good for going outdoors. I also like how solid it feels. I have dropped it pretty hard and not a scratch. It has room for more characters when naming channels. I have yet to really use the GPS other than testing but if that's somthing that appeals to you the Q10H has it. To sum up, if I'm in my kitchen or out in the garage and listening to a couple of local repeaters while otherwise engaged I'll use the UV9PX so if a call comes in I can easily see which repeater it was so I can respond. If however I'm taking the dog on a hike or going to the lake or off-roading than the Q10H is what I'll grab. Hope this helps you decide what your needs are and which radio to get.
  7. ^^^ This exactly, thank you.

    GRMS Needed?

I disagree. Author said he had cell coverage… that’s not ham speak not even sad ham speak. I think they’re a shill for T-Mobile.
  9. I hear what you’re saying… The first thing that came to my mind was what is their definition of network and as far as I have found it changes as to what it relates to but it isn’t clearly stated by the FCC. this made me smile
  10. I never said anything changed as far as I know. But hey I don’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday. I just shared a link, four months ago at that. But since you quoted me and made an inference allow me to retort. Here’s one straight from the rules if you prefer or even if you don’t, I didn’t write it. I didn’t even interpret it. Again it’s just a link. § 95.1749 GMRS network connection. Operation of a GMRS station with a telephone connection is prohibited, as in § 95.349. GMRS repeater, base and fixed stations, however, may be connected to the public switched network or other networks for the sole purpose of operation by remote control pursuant to § 95.1745
  11. I don’t think the term “wireline” is at issue. It’s the term “network” that they use. “You cannot directly interconnect a GMRS station with the telephone network or any other network for the purpose of carrying GMRS communications, but these networks can be used for remote control of repeater stations.” § 95.1749 GMRS network connection. Operation of a GMRS station with a telephone connection is prohibited, as in § 95.349. GMRS repeater, base and fixed stations, however, may be connected to the public switched network or other networks for the sole purpose of operation by remote control pursuant to § 95.1745.

    GRMS Needed?

Since you plan on over landing I would add that if you wish to communicate with someone outside of the vehicle while they spot your tire placement or backing up, navigating obstacles, if you travel with other people in other vehicles or even a group. Sometimes a radio is better. It depends on your needs.
  13. Welcome to the forum
  14. I received mine through email. It does strike me as the sort of thing that could go to a spam filter though so I would check that as well as the aforementioned teeth pulling website using your FRN number as Randy has suggested.
  15. 1.0 on 146.520, 1.25 on 446.000, 1.83 on 151.940, 1.86 on 462.562, 462.550 and 462.725, and 2.38 on 467.625 Here is what I am using for a mount. It bolts on with the hood hinge bolts. It isn’t mounted as high as you have but it works and I have no complaints.
  16. I had considered getting this very antenna but ended up with another Comet antenna the SBB-5 NMO and I have been very happy with it and while I can’t speak to the CA-2X4SR specifically I wouldn’t hesitate to get another Comet antenna.
  17. or you can just select unread content and see what has been updated that you haven't read.
  18. At least some of these appear to be ham radios. Are you sure that the frequency limits are set to go into the GMRS range and not restricted? Not having some of these radios I’m not sure if you can check this but I am able to see and even change the frequency range on some of my ham radios in chirp. GMRS radios are preset with the offset on the repeater channels so you likely wouldn’t be able to change the offset in them. I use a Mac as well and have no issues with it for programming using chirp. One more thought, when you program your radios are you copying from one radios settings in chirp and dropping into others? Is it possible you changed a setting in other radios without even knowing it. It’s a good idea to always save your previous program when making changes. Hope something here helps. Good luck.
  19. Welcome and feel free to ignore "some people". You will easily be able to spot people who are the helpful and those that want to be first to respond despite having nothing helpful to add.
  20. Check again. It’s supported by Chirp.
  21. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, saying they think a roger beep is annoying equates to violating rights is a bit of a stretch. beep edit. In my opinion.
  22. I’m going to pretty much echo what everyone else is saying. The KG-935 plus is a good solid radio and it’s my go to radio for GMRS. I have dropped mine few times as well and it survives. USB charging is nice. It has ability and room to program lots more to listen and scan. The only short coming I can think of is that it’s not waterproof but I have other radios if that’s what I need and most times I don’t. I have no problem recommending this radio and no regrets purchasing mine.
  23. @WRZB774 lots of us here have both a GMRS and amateur license. They both have their purposes and you may find one or both fit your needs. One thing to consider is who you want to communicate with and if they have the same interest as you in being licensed for whatever radio service you are using. You mentioned family and GMRS is ideal for this because they can use your license to communicate with you. It looks like you have a few repeaters around you that you may be able to reach. This can greatly improve the distance you can communicate. Some are open, some are members only. You may want to see if you can reach some of your local repeaters and if your family members can reach them from their locations. As for which radio, well that is a whole different thing but I personally started inexpensive while I got my feet wet and found what I liked and wanted in a radio. Then I started getting more radios. Then I got my amateur license and got even more radios. Beware It can be habit forming. Good luck and welcome to Mygmrs.
  24. We’ve all had typos and that’s a common one so much so I didn’t even notice. As for starting with a Baofeng, I think it’s smart to start inexpensive and they work. Great way to get to know what you may or may not want if you decide to indulge in future purchases. Nothing wrong with that.
