I was aware that you are required to monitor 16 while out on the water and why. The info of recommended channels for “chatting” was new to me. My dad had a commercial fishing boat. Sadly I get pretty sea sick so I’ve kept my boating to the bay, lakes and streams. Still I liked the info.

Not when there is something like 260 combined tones and DCS codes to choose from. Absolutely no reason you need to use what someone else is using just because you can. But you do you, I really don't care.

Not all crimes are illegal. Everything is relative. It was only an analogy after all. I don’t understand why anyone would be remotely interested in using a repeater where the owner doesn’t want you. Nor would I want to use a repeater where I felt the owner had unreasonable rules. I’ve seen that too. I just wouldn’t care and I’d find an alternative. Okay that is all good, you sound like a good person. Picking the same tone would be like picking the same lane space on a road. Sometimes there is traffic but we all should make room for each other (even when others may not). Not if you check to make sure the frequency is clear first, then merge.

And if you did that you would be interfering with other transmissions. Along with just not being a good human. Do you go out of your way to cut off other people in traffic just because they do?

No one can do that. You can still use the frequency like you use the road. That’s why the FCC says to make sure you are not interfering with other transmissions.

Just because you can find a way to pick the lock and start a car that’s sitting on a public road it doesn’t give you the right to do so. Get your own car and drive the same road all you want, loan it out to neighbors and friends if you want. Feel free to pay for whatever fuel or power source it uses, parking fees and insurance and leave the keys in it with a sign that says free to use. You are not entitled to use someone else’s car without permission because it uses public roads. The GMRS repeater is owned by an individual. It’s his or hers to do with what they want. The FCC rules and common sense back this up. It doesn’t matter if it’s for their own family, or a family farm, or a radio club, or they just let it sit there unused, it’s not yours. Sure it’s nice when people make their repeater open for others to use but it’s a permission given not an entitlement. I find it amazing that this concept is so hard for some people to grasp.

I’ve been meaning to grab some for a long time now. I think you’ve got me motivated to pull the trigger finally.

I have the KG-S88G which is of a similar form and the 701 fits fine. That said the Wouxun stock Antenna I think is better than the 701G. I do use the 701G on a Boafeng UV9G and I think it is a little better than the stock on this radio.

I understand that some repeater owners want to know who is using their repeater even though they list it as open and therefore the request permission option is set. It’s their repeater so I guess it’s their prerogative. I do personally feel if it’s open then turn requests off. Less to deal with for the owner for sure. I guess it depends on how people behave in a given area. One thing I think for repeater owners that is not a great choice is listing a repeater as permission required, keeping the tones hidden and then using 141.3 as your tones. Many consider this to be a travel tone and may not be a great choice for a permission required repeater if the owner is trying to make it obvious it has restricted use. Just my two cents.

This means it’s an open repeater and no request is required. Follow any rules they have and enjoy.

Imagine I will. Let’s say you have a home and down the hill from this home you have a shop. You and the wife would like to have the ability to call each other on the radio however the shop is a big metal faraday cage of a building and your HT don’t make it. Also she prefers to just have coms with you and isn’t really into additional chatter. You set up external yagi antennas between the two buildings to remedy the metal building issue and point them to each other. Now you set up two mobile radios, one at the shop and one at the house and set them for 15 watts or less on output and program them for simplex on one of the 467 MHz main channels which you are allowed to do as a fixed station. Set some tones if you like, just make sure you aren’t setting them for a local repeater input tone. You now have yourself a pair of fixed stations with less chance of outside interference where you two can communicate. “Hey you better come up to the house and clean up. Your brother and sister-in-law are gonna be here for dinner in an hour. Over”

The definition of an open repeater is one that has been deemed so by the owner. GMRS repeaters are privately owned. You don’t have the right to list them, only the owner does. Furthermore a repeater having a matching output does not make it open, in fact programming the output (receive) isn’t even need to operate a repeater or hear it.

I did test this with my Mac desktop and had the same results. I also put in a report to Rich.

And since repeaters and HTs aren’t listed my mobile mounted in the house isn’t a base station. Rather it is a mobile at rest.

Seems he wants help when he wants it but isn’t interested in giving it. The snarky “40 years using radios” yet ask for help that won’t reveal any info on what he did wrong that might be helpful for others is telling. As much as I hate the term (I feel it’s over used), what we have here is a bonafide Sad Ham. Some people are gatekeepers and just take. Oh well.

Having someone else’s file unless they are programming the same repeaters will give you an idea of what things look like but won’t be exactly the same as what you need. It would certainly be more helpful if you gave some more info to the problem and shared a screen shot of your chirp file to help diagnose what’s happening. It could be quite a number of things.

Doesn’t sound like something I’d do. Interesting read though. For those that missed it you purpose not just GMRS but MURS and CB linking too… it may be safe to say that you really like the idea of linking.

I agree, but then again when you consider you’d be putting it on a car that cost about 150 grand brand new it seems like a drop in the bucket.

Check out this guys solution. He says he uses a no ground plane antenna for vhf/uhf ham. Found one similar here although it says it's a tunable CB antenna from Firestik. Then I saw this, it looks like maybe a glass mount or lip, I don't know. He's going to fast around Nurburgring to see it very well I don't know if any of these are options you would consider but it was fun looking at what people have done. Good luck.
