New guy here. Always like to nerd out on this kind of stuff and have guys from work that want to go off-roading so I managed to convince them to get their licenses and radios. Now they're expecting me to get all the knowledge. Hah. I also travel from Arizona to San Diego every couple of months and want to be able to use the radio system in case of an emergency. Seems like there's a decent learning curve but I'm always down to learn this stuff especially if SHTF.

Hope to learn some cool stuff here.

Greetings all--  New to the community & GMRS in general.  Still learning my way around with GMRS but getting there.  Recently put up a vertical antenna above the house tuned for GMRS.  Have it running into a small 5watt handheld for now but intend on putting in a 50W base station soon.  Made my first contact on a repeater I found on this site (WMTG 600  @WRVE804  once I figured out how to program the tone.  Was actually surprised he could here me given I was a solid 30 miles away through hills & woods and all I had was this little handheld (albeit with a decent antenna).

Do I have it right that GMRS/repeater parlance doesn't use Q-Code system?  Just normal human dialogue?

Anyway, thanks all for the information on this site-- has been very helpful getting me this far.

Howdy all. My name is James and have had a Lic. for a few years now. I use it for family camping trips. I am now getting into GMRS mobile and learning about repeaters.

Welcome, James.

Hello, all, I'm Mike and started down this rabbit hole a few months back, mainly from curiosity and also nostalgia for my previous life in the military, where comms were obviously ubiquitous.  Thanks for hosting these forums.  I'm hoping to learn some things.

Welcome, Mike!  Thank you for your service.

I'm new here as well.  I suggest you buckle up 'cause this crowd knows what it's talking about.  The ham input is icing on the cake. :)
