  • "all" the other GMRS repeater systems throughout the country are not shutting down.. Many are, but some will choose to wait until the FCC actually does/says something.
  • This site is much more than just some linked GMRS repeaters, so, no, my guess is that there is zero reason for this site to shut down.

RIch posted something to the MyGMRS page on Facebook on the topic, to the effect of the registration server on the site being disabled at the end of the week, but since any connections are not through the site, it'll be at the repeater owners' own risk going forward.

As others have mentioned, all the considerations of GMRS use, both simplex and repeater, will still be in play, so no reason for the site to shut down.  Just losing one tiny piece (unless things change or a workaround is devised.

Here is that link, for those that don't have/want Facebook:

2nd edit:  After posting, I see RIch posted this in the MyGMRS.com forum as well.

Thanks in advance for your clarification,

Repeaters are not shutting down.  Only the linked part of repeaters.  That’s actually a very very small amount of the repeaters out there.  Plus all they have to do is pull the plug in the linked part and the repeater can stay up and running so I really don’t think this will effect much for the vast majority or gmrs users.  I’d bet most, like 90plus % of gmrs users don’t use linked repeaters.     Therefore gmrs is still very much alive and so is this site.

Shutting down the actual links is different than shutting down the repeaters themselves. Repeaters are not getting shut down because of this. It is only the links that are getting shut down.

I'm not trying to offend people. But it feels like I am stuck watching the Disney Chicken Little movie on constant repeat. The FCC is actually doing something right for a change and trying to clarify the rules making them easier to understand.

Well, unfortunately, I belong to a repeater group in Michigan, that covers Detroit up to Cheboygan. I’ve made a lot of contacts and friends all over the state, and have even talked past the Mackinaw Bridge and down to Lorain, Ohio. The hobby WAS fun, but I guess, no longer.

If you don't have your Ham license yet, well now might be a good time to consider get it.

This site isn't exactly a GMRS repeater system. Also, to be clear, the FCC hasn't actually shut down any linked repeater systems. There have been some that have been shut down by their operators out of an abundance of caution, fearing hellfire and brimstone from the FCC. Kind of an important distinction. I think so, anyway.

Why not just get into ham radio?  There are DMR repeaters all over the world.  You can even target an individual user.  Nothing is private of course, but the Brandmeister network allows you to connect to a talkgroup or an individual radio. All it takes is a technician class ham radio license and a DMR radio.  The TYT MD-UV380 is under a hundred dollars. I recommend loading it with Open UV380 firmware.

OK, I think a number of folks saw this coming.  It sucks, but it is what it is.

Answering the question of NOW WHAT?!?!?!?

Couple options.

First is moving linked repeaters to ham frequencies and re-establishing links.

If you are interested in doing that and need guidance get a post started in the TECHNICAL Discussion part of the forum and we can work from there.  The technology that is the in the background for the system is the same stuff that Ham's are using to do their linking.  You are gonna need a new SD card and new software.  Of course you need to be a ham and will need your repeater reprogrammed.  Lets not open 30 threads on the topic.  One thread and we will support each other and get it done.

I am gonna check with Rich about something offline before  go any farther.  But there may be options for those that are hard core and have decided that they will continue to remain linked.  Or to rejoin the links if their node drops off.  More to come on that.

I am studying for my ham license, I’m about 30% of the way through.(having a little trouble on the electronic theory)I was hoping to have GMRS as a diversion, a fun one at that. I guess I’m happy that they’re doing it now, so I don’t spend any more money on it.

73’s everyone, thanks for the feedback !

Good luck with getting your ham license. If you aren’t already aware check out Hamstudy.org they have just updated their app yesterday. I found it very helpful and it’s even better now.

I’m using Ham Radio Prep. Next weekend, I’ll be attending an online course, as well. Fingers crossed !! 🤞🏻

The announcement from Rich clearly stated MYGMRS web site is NOT shutting down.   No wonder people don't comprehend the GMRS FCC rules.   People don't or can't read.

I totally agree with your comment. Many opportunities for this 'linking' hobby on the HAM side with a wider range 'fun-fare'  & the bandwidth set to oblige it  -  And legal.

I found it a great source as well, for both Tech and General.

The utter lack of understanding is amazing. I realize new people to radio have to learn, but I would think there would be some basic logical understanding.

It's like all the people that think McDonalds owns all of the McDonalds restaurants or Chevrolet owns all the Chevrolet dealerships.

You mean they don't?????
