    Election time again

All I can say is that is everyone's individual right to vote or not to vote. I have been stationed all over the world and there is still no where else I would want to live. I gave a good many years of my life defending the rights we hold dear. I only want to see everyone exercise those rights.

Anybody can complain about the government. That’s part of the first amendment, but failing to vote means you missed your opportunity to do something about it. .

Politicians don’t tell me that, common sense does. People that don’t vote are welcome to complain, but I won’t listen because they helped enable the problem.

  5. You mean the Vibrasenders and Vibrasponders? The old Micors use to have a nice distinct hum on 192.8 Hz especially on a Lowband Simulcast System with Micor Stations using the Motorola HSOs. You can hear the reeds vibrate on the air when the system was keyed. That hum kinda went away with the eprom stations.

  6. First, for every channel, remove any CTCSS tones or DCS codes on both transmit and receive. Then just change them both to the same channel and you should be able to transmit from one to the other. Don’t try to transmit from one to the other when they’re just a few feet (or inches) from each other. That can cause desensing, which is when the strong transmit power from one overwhelms the sensitive receiver of the other. Put some distance between them. Good luck!

No they are not. This is the forum which is public. The tones on the map repeater site is not public. You need to be signed in to see them. In case you missed my previous post. Per the owner of this site @rdunajewski the rules are as follows with an explanation of why. Private content. Do not post sensitive information such as repeater PL/DPL (also known as privacy or CTCSS/DCS tones) tones outside of the Private Discussion forum. This is to protect sensitive information from being picked up and indexed by search engines such as Google and Bing. Also, do not post any personal information about our members, including but not limited to, their home address even if it is publicly available by searching online General Discussion is not in the private discussion forum. Here is a complete list of this sites rules . I don’t make the rules of the forum but I try follow them. You may want to note number one since you signature is an advertisement.

  10. Bluemax49ers has been my source for cables for most of the LMR radios in my collection, and some of the software as well. It does look like he has a cable for those Icoms, too, with an option to add the software. https://bluemax49ers.com/product-explorer/icom-ic-f21gm-ftdi-programming-cable-opc-i478/

Whoever is elected will be my president, even if I disagree with them. And in two more years the cycle of campaigning will begin again. If I could change one thing it would be to prohibit campaigning until 30 days before the primaries. If they cannot make their case in 30 days they shouldn't be running.

  14. I think you are overdoing the security aspect. Using a digital signal such as DMR or NXDN would probably be all the security your son's team would need. While you re not supposed to use digital signaling in the FRS or MURS bands, a few radios operating low power would probably be dismissed by most people. The limited power, 2 W or less will also limit interference to others.

  15. Just to clarify, those tones are well within the range of human hearing. For comparison the lowest note on a piano is 27.5 Hz (lowest A). After the tones are no longer needed, but before being converted to audio, radio circuitry filters out everything below 300 Hz to prevent us from hearing the tones.

  16. Horizontal is used a lot for HF where you get skip but I doubt it would be useful for UHF. Especially since you will loose some because of the change in polarization.

So just a heads up it is against this sites rules to do so outside of the Private Discussion form for reasons stated below. I got the bug..

I just drove our little mountain and parked at about 5,600ft elevation trying to make a contact on LSB,USB, and AM. No luck today. I was in my truck using the QT80. Saturday I'm doing a charity ride event in my jeep and I hope I will have the opportunity to test the QT40 while driving the route the coordinators picked out.

I occasionally will tune my HF rig to the CB channels to just listen. I hear guys from Puerto Rico blazing on channel 9 and I heard one guy broadcasting political stuff on channel 19 non stop lately. I hear plenty of people using AM, USB and LSB but not much heard on FM here in mid Missouri. I could buy a CB or just open up on of my HF rigs if I really wanted to talk on CB.

  25. I would have expected that laying it flat against the ground plane would cause it to reflect a lot. So I gave it a try. Standing up, at 465MHz, on a pizza-pan ground plane, it measured 1.6:1. Laid flat it measured 2.3:1. So it got worse, but not terribly so. Nevertheless, VHF and UHF FM is supposed to be vertical polarization. Orienting the antenna horizontally isn't going to really help anything except clearing your garage roof. However, at 2m, it got much, much worse. Something like 5:1. I didn't write it down. But standing in the upright position, in the 2m band, it's down to about 1.2.1. Your mileage may vary. Laying it flat against a larger ground plane, one with a radius large enough that the entire antenna is adjacent to the metal ground plane, is going to be a lot worse. Maybe bad enough that "some people" would be right. I know even in the vertical position, I was having reflection / high SWR issues when I put reflectix along side the antenna to cover the opening necessitated by a window air conditioner in sideways sliding windows.

  28. That was my thought as well. Curious what the pattern would be laid down, but in the end it boils down to folding and unfolding each time, or picking up a shorter whip. Personally, I'd park and measure at the lowest clearance point, and go from there to see what my options were for whip length. The ubiquitous 1/4 wave is around 6" and pretty inexpensive (not much over $10 last I looked), and a solid option of you have the ground plane for it, and the no ground plane 1/2 waves are around 12", iirc

  29. Aside from the performance issues already stated I imagine that in the folded down state it might be inclined to whip around in the wind at speeds spanking your car as you travel the highways and byways. Okay I realize that probably wouldn’t be your use scenario. All kidding aside I would swap out to a shorter antenna while using parked in the garage, something that stays vertical but isn’t affected by the height restriction.

    Alternate Power

Well, I could have handled that better. But I see what you were saying. The reason I brought it up was exactly what you said. Holding 3600 or ever 1800 RPM at a steady state with muscle power is not going to be possible. The requirements mechanically to pull it off (mechanical governors and the like) would add both complexity and additional mechanical load to the 'crank' input to maintain that RPM. The poles thing wasn't as important as the need for steady state rotational input for frequency / voltage stability. And as mentioned by others, using a DC generator or alternator with rectifier for DC output is a better option and if you feed that into a storage system (batteries or super capacitors) the energy can be generated and stored for later use in addition to being immediately available for use. I read the big windmills that generate AC power do use a massive CVT (constant velocity transmission) between the blade hub and the generator head. My question is how all that gets synced. You working in power generation probably understood that the generator needed phase synced with the grid before you could connect and start feeding power. Not sure how those pull that off.

    UV-5R vs UV-5G

Some people like to follow regulations. Using a certified radio makes it easy to select a channel and be sure it’s programmed to the right frequency, with the right offset (if any), at the right output power, and using the right bandwidth to avoid interfering with other channels and services.

  39. I may not have fully read the entire post on the additional channels or the talk about Digital Voice, but it would be great to see that in the GMRS spectrum. Although I seriously doubt that D-STAR or FUSION would be implemented in GMRS, since those Digital Modes were designed for the Amateur Radio Service. I'm not saying that those modes wouldn't work, but it would be defiantly sound weird, especially when GMRS user who also are Amateur Radio Operators talking other GMRS Licensees that aren't Hams. Which probably put us back to where we were just a few months ago, with FCC requesting repeater owners and trustees to terminate links. I understand that the General Mobile Radio Service was designed as a short-range communications service that could be implemented for commercial or non-commercial use, and not to be used as Amateur Radio.

  40. CCR is Credence Clearwater Revival if you’re my age, but around here it is shorthand for cheap Chinese radio. As @OffRoaderX said it’s intended to denigrate. There are a few other abbreviations that you’ll run into: PL is short for Private Line, which is what Motorola marketed as their implementation of CTCSS. There are other abbreviations for this as well. CTCSS keeps your squelch closed (radio audio output silent) unless it detects a specific audio tone included in a transmission. DPL means digital private line and is the same thing except with a digital code instead of an audio tone. It also has several other names such as DCS and DTCSS. Neither DTCSS nor CTCSS provides any security but they do serve to reduce interruptions.

  41. RX = Receive TX = Transmit CCR is a derogatory and racially motived term that "some people" use when describing a radio that does everything their very expensive radio does, but it costs 10X less monies.

    Election time again

If one doesn't vote then one can't complain about the results. I would urge everyone to go and vote for the candidate of your choice. I don't care who it is. One buddy in my coffee group said if he doesn't like any of the candidates he just writes his own name in on the ballot, but he does vote.

    KG-uv9Gx radio

I have the Ham version of this radio. It works well, supper het and has AM bands if you want that. It is not waterproof, it is IP55 which means it can handle water to the face so would likely be okay in the rain. It comes with lots of preprogrammed scanner frequencies. The screen is not great outdoors. Of the Wouxon GMRS radios I would go with the KG-935G Plus. Although It isn’t waterproof either it is slightly higher rated at IP66. It isn’t supper het but you can’t tell. It won’t receive AM air bands but I don’t really listen to that and as for all the scanner frequencies I mostly put my own in. The KG-935G Plus is my favorite GMRS radio, solid and a bit easier to see outside. That’s just my opinion. On a pricier side the KG-Q10G will get you there with the waterproof IP67 rating. It scans a bit slower. My only gripe with the KG-Q10 radios is the lack of an indicator telling you if it was the upper or lower display that received the most recent transmission which would be nice if you happen to be monitoring two channel/frequencies at the same time. Edit- this turned out to be an issue with my radio and apparently is not indicative of the KG-Q10 radios. I recommend watching some reviews on YouTube and think of how you plan to use it. I hope some of this helps. Good luck.

    Alamo City GMRS Community

March 2024 Update from Bastrop, Tx. Alamo/New Braunfels is my closest repeater on the Alamo network. It is 70 miles away and pegs the meter on my KG-1000. Yesterday, I did a radio check and spoke to a 2 mobile units at both ends of 1604, east side and west side. They were as clear as day on my end and they heard me LC. What an awesome service to our Tx GMRS community. Many thanks to all involved.
