Mikeam reacted to OffRoaderX in Interacting with jammers and malicious operators... Big No-No
I agree with that club president and the OP, that talking to jammers/dickheads just lets them know they're doing a good job and gives them the attention that their mother never gave them as a child, but I really want to hear more facts from @WRQC527 about the FCC pulling licenses for talking to unlicensed operators.

Mikeam reacted to marcspaz in Interacting with jammers and malicious operators... Big No-No
I lost my license while talking an unlicensed user, Seriously.... I have no idea where I put it. I ended up having to print another copy.
Ah.... I'm just joking. I didn't lose my license, but i did get a strongly worded scolding from the club president. He said "Don't feed the monkeys."

Mikeam reacted to JeepCrawler98 in Setting up my GMRS repeater channel this weekend
List it now; I list repeaters months before they even go online just so there's a chance for someone to let me know if I'm sitting it on an occupied frequency.

You can do it now. I would just add a note in the description with it's current "test" status. You can update the listing as often and as much as you'd like.

Mikeam reacted to wayoverthere in Wouxun base station
Handheld definitely has convenience on it's side...power can help too, though line of sight is even better. If using a smaller antenna let's you use a better/higher mounting location, it's likely worth it. A 1/4 wave for gmrs is just a little 6" hatpin.
depending on your choice of radios, it's nice when you can just make one common code plug (term for the file of programming) to use on both radios (base and mobile).

Mikeam reacted to wayoverthere in Wouxun base station
Power wise, there's lots of options at various price points, the key is making sure what you get can provide enough current to support what you want to run. Less expensive power supplies may scrimp on filtering (read, interference) or features. Dx engineering has a few options here link while se of the Tekpower on Amazon are well regarded as well.
Antenna wise, indoors or outside below roofline are varying levels of less than ideal, but that doesn't mean they won't work to some extent. Haven't tested simplex, but I get into the local repeater fine with a small 5/8 wave whip indoors on a bookcase, mag mounted on a piece of sheet metal.

Mikeam reacted to Doctnj in Wouxun base station
So ive been running a wouxun mobile as a base station for over a year now. It has earned its spot in my ham shack having no issues in over a year. I am getting a couple other brand radios to cover some ham frequencies. Several times in this past year Ive tried to find a reason to dislike this radio that many of the super powers in this forum call junk.
i havent run across any to date. We set up and use repeaters which are in very close proximity to very important repeaters. The radio equipment that are being used for the actual repeaters and link radios are a different brand and that is mainly a duty cycle performance of known components. But I have used the repeater with my wouxun radio with no interference in either direction,
Some of my ham buddies have switched to the 1000g to run gmrs. One in particular has ove 50 years in the radio world and he describes the 1000g as being solid. So much so that he ordered some more wouxun to run as mobiles. He runs radios for hours every day and continues to say they are solid. I agree completely.
So if you are on the fence about this brand, I would say with malice that the 1000g is a great selection for gmrs.

Mikeam reacted to Screech in KG-1000G programing - AM Band Scan Group
I ran the software a little to see how the interface is while I'm waiting on my radio and if you put the AM channels in their own 100 channel block, I think you can set A to scan just that block.

Mikeam reacted to mbrun in Do you want to see the national net come back, and are you willing to be NCO?
Big national internet-enabled net for GMRS, No. Organically formed local net with a clear local mission, perhaps.

Mikeam reacted to htims05 in KG-1000G programing - AM Band Scan Group
I don't yet have my programing cable for the KG-1000G but I was wondering if it's possible to create a custom scan group of AM channels - in frequency mode? I like to listen to air traffic from time to time.

Mikeam reacted to Sshannon in Signal received but all static
I don’t know. I just want to make that clear up front. It may be noise from some device in your house or in a neighboring house (assuming you live near someone else.) But here are some things you can try to discover the answer for yourself:
See if another GMRS radio is affected as well. If not, then perhaps it’s a problem with your radio. If another radio is affected or if you cannot easily check, then turn off all the power to your house. Do you still receive the static? If so, turn your house mains back on then turn off your breakers one at a time to try and eliminate the circuits that are not causing the problem. If you find a circuit that is connected to the static do some detective work to determine what’s plugged into that circuit. I would suspect an LED light or fluorescent light with a solid state ballast, a computer or other device. If turning off the whole house power didn’t help, go for a drive. Do you still receive the interference when you’re away from your home or neighborhood? Good luck!

Mikeam reacted to gortex2 in NMO Roof Mount Location
you should be good with the first option. I run similar on my F150 (6 NMO mounts). Rear is CB and VHF, front are all bands, and farthest front are UHF

Mikeam reacted to Sshannon in NW Montana GMRS
I’m in Butte, so SW Montana, but as far as ham radio there’s a DMR repeater on 70 cm in Eureka. I assume you’re in that area, maybe Troy or Libby. It’s networked to the Brandmeister network so you can literally talk to people all over the world.

Ham radio is much more active than gmrs in Montana although Billings now has gmrs repeaters.
Good luck!

Mikeam reacted to donmontalvo in KG-1000-G In a Jeep
Finally mounted the Wouxun KG-1000G to the passenger side of the console.
The mic mounts to the low end of my JeepUniq cradle (my Garmin InReach Explorer+ mounts on the top).
I plan to mount my CB there at some point, then I'll move the Wouxun KG-1000G to under the drivers seat, and will find a place for the faceplate.

Mikeam reacted to PACNWComms in Gmrs Base Station Antenna
Yes, 1/4 wave antenna for UHF. On my car, I use a dual band Tram (VHF/UHF) NMO mounted antenna, and it is about 1.5 feet long that would work pretty well in an apartment too if someone were to need dual band, and a small antenna on a magnet mount, baking sheet ground plane setup.

Mikeam reacted to PACNWComms in Gmrs Base Station Antenna
I had to look back at my gallery posts, to see the Laird antennas I use. It is the 6" QW450, with the GB8UM magnet mount base, then placed onto a metal object for a small ground plane.

Mikeam got a reaction from AdmiralCochrane in Gmrs Base Station Antenna
I use the baking sheet and a 3 Browning 450MHz-470MHz UHF 3dBd Land Mobile NMO Antenna . I get good local coverage including two repeaters and one repeater I listen to that is 56 miles.

Mikeam reacted to wayoverthere in Gmrs Base Station Antenna
my 'base' isn't too far off of that....3db (5/8 wave) midland whip (what they sold before the current 'ghost'), mag mounted on a 8"x12" piece of sheet metal on top of a bookcase. can't say much for simplex, but makes repeaters just fine at 30 and 60 miles out.
i believe laird makes a similar whip for 450-470mhz, and both that and mine are around 12" tall. for best results you may want to have it outdoors when in use, on a window ledge or balcony, as many high rises use low emmissivity glass (low-e), which in addition to blocking heat, also somewhat blocks radio signals.

Mikeam reacted to PACNWComms in Gmrs Base Station Antenna
Here is the link for a previous thread on this subject.
For my own use on the second floor of my house, I just use a New Motorola (NMO) mount UHF antenna, a magnet mount, and have it mounted on the top of a 19" network rack. Other people use metal baking pans for GMRS antennas as a ground plane. GMRS antennas do not have to be big, or even outdoors to work....I get consistent 8-10 miles in a mountainous environment, but this drops to about 5-8 miles when I move my base station to the first floor (daylight basement) setting.

Mikeam reacted to BoxCar in High Frequency battery charger.
Get the make and model of the Harbor Freight charger noting if it reports it meets FCC approval. Report this information, including photos of the packaging listing FCC certification to the FCC. Pictures of the charger assembly showing a label listing the model information and any certification logos including the country of manufacture. This is the type of report the FCC will investigate. It may end with a citation to Harbor Freight but little else for existing equipment.

Mikeam reacted to WRBU799 in New Interfering (IX) Signals - "Baby Monitors" using GMRS/FRS
Can confirm this was jamming the input to our local 462.625 repeater. After a fox hunt led to an in-person visit and conversation, followed by multiple escalating phone calls, it finally ceased operation. It was being used as an intercom, to talk through a plexiglass window, at a popular local buffet restaurant for patrons to tell the chef how they would like their steaks prepared.

Mikeam reacted to H8SPVMT in Jeeps & Radios
Why do you think you have them programed correctly?
Have you actually made contact with the repeaters and if so, what is your indication(s) that you have opened the repeater?
Did you contact the repeater operator thru a conversation on the repeater, email or text messages?
How do you know for certain the repeaters are online and operating?
I'm not banging you here, I wheel a lot too by myself and even did the Trans American Trail by myself. An Inreach or Spot with some helicopter/medivac insurance would be a good investment.
