H8SPVMT reacted to marcspaz in Pennsylvania people.. you need to take action now
I have to disagree with using a mobile radio being dangerous when driving. I am unaware of a single study that supports the claim. There are plenty of studies that show drivers adjusting their AM/FM/Sat radios are in the top 3 causes of distracted driving, but nothing about 2-way radio.

I would think it's no different then talking to a passenger. The next step from laws like this is no entertainment radio, no navigation, no talking to passengers. It's stupid and tyrannical. Just hold people accountable for distracted driving instead of naming and outlaw every possible distraction.

The same people tend to like ridiculous gun laws that don’t actually reduce crime. Those people likely don’t own radios or guns, so they don’t care. They want government to make it all better. Safer. They also lack enough intelligence to understand they are willfully and incrementally giving up their freedom.

It's been my experience that you might hear them, or in the case they are using another CTCSS setting you'll see the signal bar on your display indicate a signal reception from their radio. Pay attention to the, "listen first" as well.

You should always listen before sending. With no receive tones you would hear any traffic on the channel,

H8SPVMT reacted to Sshannon in New to all this. Question.
    Wait a second.
The output tone for a repeater is the receive tone for your radio and honestly you should probably leave it out at first.
The Input tone for the repeater is the transmit tone for a radio trying to use the repeater.

What does that number mean?  Is it just a unique identifier for the site or does it have other meanings too?  Ty!

Yes this would be a great idea for learning to use practical navigational skills minus the GPSr available today. My scout education prepared me for life back in the late 1960s as well.
As a matter of fact, I still carry my first compass given to me for map reading to this day in my Jeep.

You may have already ripped it out of your Jeep but I have the same radio. When trying to transmit out on a repeater channel make sure to switch the 'talk around' option in the menu off.

    H8SPVMT reacted to WRZT673 in Midland mxt400
Okay guys, I used my hand held on a simplex channel and was able to  receive a good clean audio on the MXT400 at about 40 feet, but leaving the hand held at same distance, I got no audio transmitted from the MXT400. This confirms that there is no output from the MXT400. So I have decided to return the radio to Midland for a replacement or repair, since the radio is only 4 months old. Thanks for any and all of the responses. I’ll update the findings whenever I hear back from Midland support. Everett

H8SPVMT reacted to Sshannon in Can you reduce syllables in your call sign ("Ten" instead of "One-Zee-Roh")?
Technically, you should pronounce each character, but realistically, for GMRS nobody cares.  The fact that you even attempt to ID is better than most people do.

C'mon, Roger Beeps are like naked people lurking in the shadows as you travel down the highway.  You never get to see a pretty one and only the ugly, un-interesting parts are exposed!
And they cause the same people to scream at a volume and tone that no one listening wants to endure for even a minute.

So if your just hiking or biking use low power and dont worry about call signs. Toss them a FRS radio and be done.

I would assume that each member must at least ID with the family callsign,
then you can call each other anything but late to dinner.

H8SPVMT got a reaction from RayP in An interesting proposal for GMRS+
This reminds me of the citizen beginning to pass a Tractor Trailer traveling below the speed limit on the interstate. With his blinker on citizen begins to get out into the left lane and pass the truck at the legal speed limit.  Truck driver now speeds up to the speed limit too, preventing the the fellow to pass without speeding.
Now all those that like to drive faster than the speed limit are blocked and blowing their horns.  Whos at fault; everyone is traveling the speed limit?
I say the truck driver, as he needs to slow down and allow the citizen to pass and clear the left lane.
There are always people with what looks like good intentions.   But they seem to disregard the laws after getting use to never getting caught or, having their actions reviewed by the officials....
Are the Sad Hams getting frustrated because they think GMRS users are in their way?

I have an amateur general license and GMRS license. If I want to use digital modes I get on one of my amateur radios. I like the simplicity of GMRS and do not want to see it change.

Out by ourselves over the holidays and ran a portion of the South Carolina Adventure Route (SCAR).  This one trail was very close to 1000 ft of mud. Total trip 240 miles.
