It definitely is the bottom button, the one with two dashes as you say. Also as @Sshannon mentions just one press. I think there may be an issue with the radio. When I pull the battery from mine the light defaults to off when it's plugged back in. Very odd indeed. Where did the configuration come from for the event?
I think I would down load a copy of all stored frequencies first and go ahead and do the reset on the radio. Be sure to save it all because it won't save any of the frequencies even the preloaded ones.
When I first got this radio I was testing the FM radio and hit the sk1 button longer than needed and set off the alarm... now there is a feature I could do without.
You are correct. He mentioned the SP button? Maybe just hitting wrong button? It’s a quick push instead of holding for MON. I tried leaving mine on and unplugged the battery and when I plug it back in it stayed off. ?
I don’t see any option to change the MON button in chirp for this radio. Have you tried just pulling the battery and putting it back in? Also it isn’t the SP button but rather the Sk2 button. The lower of the two smaller buttons. Hope this works for you.
I have to say I also have a pile of unused ones also. That said I do have a more robust lanyard with a ring and a clip so if I go out on the water or some place precarious I can clip it to me and it’s not going anywhere. I just keep it in the glove box. But those wrist straps I just wouldn’t trust them.
In Op’s scenario though he was trying to extend the signal he gets from someone else’s repeater I believe. So his method would have to hear or input from that 462 from original repeater and then put out on another 462 if I understood correctly. I liked @Sshannon back to back radio idea fwiw
Not to reopen a can of worms but this seems like a scenario where a duel band receive (and TX) radio with GMRS and MURS would be handy… I know it’s not allowed.
For me personally my interest in this subject (other than just the to have the knowledge) is so that if I take a hike away from camp (realizing that all radios have limits) what will work to keep in touch with my wife while I’m out and about. So Ham isn’t going to be an option (she wouldn’t be interested) of course Garmin inreach is but I’m thinking radio here and that leaves GMRS or the no license required MURS. Mostly we hike together but going out in a kayak may be another matter and for that I think GMRS won’t be a problem. I also don’t count on repeaters being out in the woods. @axorlov (how’d I do there @MichaelLAX ?) makes a good case for my needs.
I hear people say VHF will do better in the woods than UHF. Usually in the context of MURS compared to FRS. So apples to apples as far as wattage is concerned at it's most allowable on the two (MURS/FRS). My question is how does MURS specifically at 2 watts compare with GMRS at 5 watts in the same use case? Say in the woods. Does the VHF due to it's behavior still perform better than the UHF? Same? Less than? Does the increase in wattage give GMRS an advantage in this situation. In an apples to oranges wattage comparison. I understand there is more than wattage at play here. Seriously wondered about this as one of the things I like to do is go hiking. I don't have MURS radios but if I did I would give this a test.
okay I need more coffee as I just read the last post and not OP and his statement. Though I don't know what channel he was on so maybe they were putting out the same wattage and my original question is still valid. MichaelLax was your test same wattage? Obviously that's an urban environment. Anyway sorry I missed OP's comments about his experience.
I don’t have this radio but Try putting it in location channel 24. This is channel 16 frequency (462.5750) in a repeater location (462.5750/467.5750) and should be able to put your tones in and have the offset already. You may find this tone mode chart helpful also. It does look like you chose the right code for 654 DPL. I hope this helps.
Okay I see where you're going now. How about a blue tooth enabled HT that is hooked to an external antenna that you can monitor without disturbing other people in the cabin?
And for the record I don't think the question was stupid, I love thinking out of the box even if it's just for theoretical discussion...
Basically I'd say your best bet would be to set up a base station. If you can reach the repeater with a mobile outdoors and want better access indoors. You can also try getting up on the roof with your HT and see if the hight helps you reach the repeater, if so you could set an antenna up on the roof and just hook up to your HT inside thus saving the expense of another radio or swap the mobile back and forth. But hey if you can afford it who dosn't like more radios.?
Seems like there is enough reasons that this isn’t a good idea to implement yet I really like the shared information and thoughts on this… cool stuff JeepCrawler98 and Sshannon!
