FCC GMRS Service Operations Page Updated 04 Aug, 2024
WRUU653 replied to WRZU673's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
You’ll get no argument from me on the rules needing to be clear. I just sold my parents home and I swear there must be 10 more pages than the last time I dealt with a real estate transaction… why so complicated? You bought it, I sold it end of story. I get being on the side of freedom… as long as it doesn’t infringe on others freedoms. If I may put my own simplified analogy inspired by @WRKC935‘s traffic law comments… Think of a ham radio license as the ability to travel the roads at speed (using many frequencies and repeaters linked and otherwise) only people in a cross walk (GMRS/FRS) need a space albeit a much smaller space where they can travel (operate) without being run over. There’s only a small number of frequencies available and mass linking takes away from those who have a small space to operate. I feel pretty free in the ability to roam in both places. I’m okay with some regulations. While nothing is perfect, It’s part of society that for the most part works. I feel better knowing that we have crosswalks for my grandchildren. The limitations of GMRS/FRS I hope will keep it from being taken over by hams or worse yet the madness that is CB and that it remains family friendly. We don’t have linked repeaters where I am other than ham. We do have some decent GMRS repeaters though. I’m thankful that we do. If I don’t want to listen to a state wide repeater on ham it’s easy to find somewhere else on the radio to go. I think as GMRS continues to gain in popularity that won’t be easy to do. So while I don’t really have skin in the game either I’m compelled to speak my mind for what I think is the big picture and the greater good even if it’s for someone else. It would seem the FCC regulations while confusing at times has clarified their position on the subject. I just happen to agree with the why that they have put forth. -
Watch @marcspaz’s video “Intro to GMRS”. I’m always telling people this but he really does a good job and deserves credit for his video.

FCC GMRS Service Operations Page Updated 04 Aug, 2024

I don’t know Marc, I respect your opinion, you know I do but seems that they will just re clarify the rules. “Linking repeaters, via the internet or other networks, undermines the purpose and usefulness of the GMRS and FRS.” My unsolicited opinion is I don’t hate linked repeaters, that’s one reason I got my Amateur license after my GMRS license, so I could use our County wide voting repeater system we have here. It’s great. I don’t hate linked GMRS repeaters. Hate is too strong a word. I don’t like the idea of linked repeaters on GMRS though. I’d like to see GMRS not get over crowded to the point people have difficulty using it for simplex coms. I’d like to see it not become Ham or CB but rather stay its own thing. FRS 2.0 if you will. With the emphasis on the F for family. Someone here made a great point that children with FRS radios aren’t likely to go away and that’s what will keep GMRS from becoming ham lite. GMRS is forever tied to FRS (Family Radio Service) and that’s what will keep it restricted. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. GMRS should be for us to use with families, off-roading, camping, at the lake, staying in touch with the kids and grandkids and yes with repeaters. But not covering multiple states. People that want linked repeaters? Okay, get off the “I hate hams bandwagon” and get your Technicians license and have at it. It’s not hard. So many people jump on Randy’s sad ham meme but I see just as many sad Gmrs people. However for the most part radio people in both realms are pretty decent at least that’s been my experience. So yeah I know you have your ham license as do I but If you belong to a radio forum, you might be a radio dork, as am I but I think most people on FRS and GMRS aren’t though. That’s what’s great about it, we can get our non radio people, friends and families into GMRS easy. If you mutate it into ham you’ll loose what makes it unique and useful. Just my opinion. -
I guess it depends on how you define Nets? If you’re talking about linked repeaters it would seem so, however if you’re referring to a group getting together on a repeater to do a scheduled log in and discussion then no I don’t see that being an issue unless the system is linked.

Seems to be a lot of discussion on the repeater page about no response to permission requests. You may want to try snail mail to the owner or try contacting someone who has knowledge about the site locally. One poster said the repeater is open even though it’s listed as request required. If you find out what the status is share the info please. I travel out that way occasionally and would be curious.

Perhaps I misunderstood what he was asking. I have been a bit punchy today from consuming cough syrup so… -

Easy or Pain to use One Mobile Unit as Base and Mobile
WRUU653 replied to TrikeRadio's question in Technical Discussion
The Wouxun KG-1000 has a detachable face, I think the Retevis RT95 does also. I have an Icom 2730A with a detachable face that connects to the mounting plate with magnets. I unplug the face and it fits in a sunglasses case I have and the magnets keep it in the case. My mic plugs into a Jack in the center console. It takes less than 30 seconds and no sign of a radio is visible. Besides all that, it’s easier to find a spot to mount just the face. Midland and Retevis also have radios where the display is on a mic which would be easy to unplug and stash in the glove box. Anyway there’s options out there if you desire a stealth install. I’m sure I’m overthinking this -
I think that and opening the hole where the mic is allowed for more sound to come in made a difference. I was careful to just open the mic hole so I didn’t mess up the integrity of the waterproof seal around the microphone. I got the cotton idea from a fellow amateur radio operator. I don’t know that my mic for my Icom 2730A even needed any help but I prefer the button style mic clip over the hanging style so when I opened the mic up to install a button mount I put cotton in it as well because it worked so well on the cheap Baofeng mic. I keep stealing my wife’s cotton for projects

WXYZ123 testing, no response needed. WXYZ123 looking for a radio check or repeater check or signal report. Kerchunk Ask your repeater owner doctor which one is right for you. edit - I have the flu so my humor may be off right now

This much was clear to me… 1) he meant Motorola, what radio we don’t know. 2) UV5R, self explanatory but again exact model could be a variation. 3) DB20 obviously Radioddity. Do we need more info? Yes. Yes, I have a suggestion. 1) Try to give more info when articulating a question. 2) Watch @marcspaz’s video “Intro to GMRS”. It really should be recommended viewing when joining the site IMO.

What radio are you using? Is it a GMRS radio? Did you program the repeater on a repeater channel or on a simplex channel? A GMRS radio will already have the offset on repeater channels. For instance if you programmed on channel 21, that’s simplex and you need to be on channel 29 which is a repeater channel. I’m suggesting this because you said you could hear “radio traffic” so as it has been mentioned the problem is likely on your end and not the repeaters end. Instead of trying to reach a repeater owner on a forum they may not even be paying attention to you may need to look at your set up closer. Give us some more information and maybe we can help.

The 1 and 2 are just different downloads. I do see a difference in UV5R and UVR. If you program one you should be able to copy and paste to the other file so you can at least upload them with the same programs.

I have a waterproof mic for the Baofeng GT-3WP/UV9G and I did this and added cotton inside the mic as well. When tested my report came back that they could not tell the difference between the mic and my Wouxun KG-UV9PX with no mic. I can tell you the mic was horrible before. This was a real improvement.

Check this thread out here. I thought this was a good solution. -
I like how you think. Just get mom her own license, isn’t she worth it?

It was definitely a joke people.

GMRS Transitioning to Hobbyist-Type Service?
WRUU653 replied to intermod's topic in General Discussion
guilty of that one myself -
Your repeater channels will already have the offset built in.
-
GMRS radios typically have the offset already set on repeater channels 23 through 30 if not through 38. The DIY repeater channels should already have the offset built in.
