WRTG259 Posted October 19, 2023 Report Posted October 19, 2023 Was thinking of using funny phonetics for Callsign on radio any kind of suggestions? thanks Quote
OffRoaderX Posted October 19, 2023 Report Posted October 19, 2023 On GMRS all phonetics are funny because they aren't necessary and many people laugh at them. WRCQ487, Hoppyjr and AdmiralCochrane 3 Quote

UncleYoda Posted October 19, 2023 Report Posted October 19, 2023 Necessary or not, phonetics are helpful on any radio service (not as much though on ones that don't have callsigns). I even sometimes use phonetics on the phone but some of the dippity-doos have trouble understanding them. WRTG259 and Raybestos 1 1 Quote
WRXB215 Posted October 19, 2023 Report Posted October 19, 2023 My suggestion would be to not make up new ones. Just use the ones that already exist. The whole point is to have clear communications. That is why the phonetic alphabet came into existence in the first place. WRYZ926, marcspaz, PRadio and 4 others 7 Quote

WRYZ926 Posted October 20, 2023 Report Posted October 20, 2023 I'll stick with the phonetic alphabet that I learned in the military, which is the same as most amateur radio operators also use. It is not hard to learn. WRTG259, WRYU400, kc9pke and 2 others 5 Quote

SteveShannon Posted October 22, 2023 Report Posted October 22, 2023 Frankly, unless someone requests your call sign phonetically because they cannot understand it when you ID, I wouldn’t use phonetics. Use your names and ID with your call sign. And, if someone does ask for it phonetically, you’re more assured of them hearing it correctly if you use the NATO phonetics. They were chosen to reduce the chance of misunderstanding by people with accents, and people who natively speak other languages. That’s important to the military and to hams who might be communicating with hams internationally, but has less importance for GMRS, where coverage is limited to within the USA. AdmiralCochrane Posted October 27, 2023 Report Posted October 27, 2023 I agree, THE standard phonetic alphabet is THE standard and there need not be a 'second standard' Just the same, often a simple nmeonic is helpful. A ham near me has a call sign ending in NRS - he tells people he is "not real smart" Quote
OffRoaderX Posted October 28, 2023 Report Posted October 28, 2023 Because Imagine what would happen if someone used non-standard phonetics on GMRS. Think of the children! Hoppyjr 1 Quote
