We're all adults here. You or your "friend" should be familiar with the FCC regulations. If you choose to use a radio in an illegal fashion then you do so at your own risk. You're asking about the likelihood of the FCC conducting an investigation. That all depends on how bad you piss someone off or perhaps interfere with commercial or public service broadcasting. I'm not sure if anyone knows the answer to that. By appearances, the FCC only goes after the most egregious offenders, but you never know when you might catch an agent that's having a really bad day and wants to make an example of you. Like many choices that we make in life, let your conscience be your guide.

GMRS "frequency" listing has been the standard for over 50 years Channel numbers, only a few years, and still not standardized That is why.

The plus + model is very nice, with 2m, 1.25m, and 70cm all in one package. No HF or waterfall display of course.

n4gix reacted to BoxCar in CB vs. GMRS/FRS
Yes Michael, there are units that do cover those frequencies but Mr. KIA, the OP was asking as a person not licensed to operate that type of unit and specifically for a unit to cover just the GMRS and CB bands which there isn't a unit. So, quit being an idiot and address the question being asked in the frame it was asked. And further, the Yaesu doesn't operate on the GMRS or CB frequencies without illegal modification so the answer is STILL there isn't a unit that combines those particular frequencies.

Nearly all electronic gadgets we use show some parasitic drain on a car's battery. That is why I installed a battery monitor in the hot lead from the battery to the distribution block under the dash where all my 'gadgets' draw their power. If the battery voltage drops below 12.5 VDC, it will automatically disconnect the main power to the distribution block. I've never again had a problem starting the car due to a drained battery! $25 to preserve my sanity... ?

Well, if you do put up a repeater with a good (high) antenna system, there's a good chance you could get "state wide" coverage! ?

Actually, I've only been at this for a couple of months, but the only (2) connections I've made at *all* in that time were on Channel 20 from folks who were driving past our city.  They both called it "The travel channel", so I feel like this must be a fairly known thing...

That is absolutely correct. Talk-Around is not the same thing as "Reverse (frequencies)".

You evidently did not read the history posted on the NSEA website. Unfortunately, many have either never learned, or have forgotten the history of GMRS.

For the most part those self-labled "private repeaters" are very low profile "garage repeaters" and have a very tiny footprint anyway... Very few people can afford to pay monthly rent for tower space.

The line exists because Canada has long ago reserved those frequency pairs for their own use! That is why using them is forbidden to GMRS operators.

That simply is not accurate. NSEA* has a repeater on 462.675/467.675 141.3 for well over fifty-one years now! Call sign is also the oldest in Illinois: KAA 8142

This is untrue. A repeater owner is not responsible for any traffic carried through the repeater as the repeater has no control over the traffc. The responsibility lies solely with the traffic originator. The repeater owner would be responsible only if  they originated the improper transmission in the first place.

n4gix reacted to DDinMCMI in Whats with repeater users needing permission on GMRS?
Think of it this way.  Would you allow someone to pick up your radio and use it without your permission?  GMRS repeaters are personally-owned radios.  When you access a repeater you a in effect using equipment that belongs to someone else.  They have the right to determine who can use their radio.  The airwaves are public.  The equipment is not.
Related to that is the issue of liability.  As repeater owners are themselves licensed GMRS operators, they are legally responsible for any transmissions utilizing their license.  That includes any traffic retransmitted through their repeater equipment.  Should an outside operator violate FCC rules or operate unlicensed through a repeater, the FCC can hold the repeater operator liable and subject to penalty.  Basically you are using someone else's license when you access their repeater.  They have the right and responsibility to protect their license and insure that everything that comes out of their radio is legal and above-board.
As far as the use of GMRS, I agree that it is for the most part not a hobby-based medium in the vein of Ham radio, although that may change somewhat as GMRS gains more popularity.  The evolution of GMRS clubs, repeater nets and repeaters in largely-populated areas has lent itself to more general social traffic among radio enthusiasts.  I doubt GMRS will ever reach the hobby aspect of Ham just because of the technical limitations, but I could see more hobbyist use as interest and network infrastructure grows.
